View Full Version : Induction motor "thump" on start up with Planer/Jointer

I've got the Grizzly G0490X jointer and the ShopFox w1742 planer. Both have this odd sound they make as the belts snap a briefly during start up, for like a half second, and make a thump sound. Once the motor is up to speed the belts stop flexing. I've sorta forgotten about it with the G0490X since it doesn't seem to effect anything, but with the w1742, the belt gear had a great deal of ground off belt. Since this is a floor model, it could be that the salemen had the motor incorrectly tensioned, or didn't follow up after the initial break in.

From what I can tell this does not effect the performance of either tool. I have tensioned the planer to the point that there is no play in the belt. With the jointer I probably would have had to use some sort of plybar or spreader to apply more tension.

Is this sort of thump or snapping of the belts just normal for these sorts of high HP motors, will the belts break in, or do I need to put additional tension on the belts?
