Behind the "Throne" is this blank wall...
451522
(Red lines are from the computer) that needs.....something. Have to leave access to the light switch. There is another wall..
451523
That I will need to leave a space in front of....mainly to allow a door to open up against the wall, and NOT bang your head...leave just enough room for a door handle, too....
Single Brain Cell Sketch Up came up with a starting plan...
451524
along with a treatment for the bottom ends of the cabinet sides...
451525
Just in case a towel rod needs added....Lumber Supply?
451526
9 planks of 1 x 6 Ash....might be enough?.....we'll see.

451527
Want to show off the grain....too.

Stay tuned...:D

So you are planning on a closed cabinet (it has doors) it seems. One was in a bathroom when I moved in and it is simply "shelves". I have considered making something nicer and was on the bench about doors or no doors. The truth of the matter is that if I finally get around to it I will ask the wife and she will dictate the answer.

The problem is that what is there works. It is not very attractive, but it does work.

Looking forward to this one.

You mean a cabinet like this one that filled a similar space in my daughters first house?

Wow, very nice

Sides....
451560
5-3/8" x 30" long...bottom 4" has a double curve...
451562
There are 2 shelves at the bottom, first one starts at that 4" mark ( 4-3/16") second one at the 10" mark (measurements are to the bottom of each shelf) Shelves sit in 7/8" wide dados, 1/2" deep.

Tablesaw makes a bunch of cuts..
451565
A chisel comes along and knocks the waste loose...
451566
Then things get cleaned up with a router...
451567
A cordless one, at that. Then a test fit..
451569
Decided on a "mid" shelf....using a 1/2" thick Pine board as the shelf...means I needed yet another dado..
451570
Except this needed to be 1/2" x 1/2"...bottom of the shelf sits at 21-1/4" up from the bottom of the sides..again, waste away the waste, knock the waste loose, then clean out with the Stanley 71-1/2...
Also needed to get 3 shelves cut to size...
451571
23-1/4" long, by 5-3/8" wide....

Stay tuned....I also got the top of the cabinet made, today...:D

steven c newman

Cabinet needs a top...if nothing else than to keep the dust bunnies out....so.

Top is about 1/4" wider than the sides...to allow a 1/4" plywood panel as a back. Staight-line ripped one edge, as the board was tapered a bit..
451593
Ends were squared up, at 26" length. a dado was cut 1" in from each end.....I was going to cut a round corner there in the res circles....changed to the better looking edge..
451594
Hmmm....could be about time to change the bandsaw blade?
451595
Will clean this up with the beltsander.....
451596
Top of the top needed flattened a bit....bowed up down the center...was. Stacked all the parts...
451597
Into a "Flat-Pak"....3 shelves, 2 sides, and the top. Will try a glue-up later....then see about a couple doors? Have to do a pair of panel glue-ups for that....and make the frames...

Stay tuned :D

steven c newman

There will be cussing involved....what started out as just a dry fit...
451690
Soon devolved into a glue adventure....Trying to glue and clamp everything at once....didn't work too great..
451691
This being about the best way to add clamps....
451696
Even ones shaped like a Sabre....then came adding the top...
451701
getting long clamps to fit around other clamps, and pull the case square....at the same time...then, needed more clamps..
451702
To pull the shelves straight....1/2" one was trying to bow....letting this mess sit overnight...maybe even 2.....I suppose I had better clean up under the tablesaw?
451703
Most will be headed to the FirePit....been rather busy, lately...the saw, that is...

Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
02-10-2021, 9:55 AM
Was a bit busy with other items, yesterday.....maybe this afternoon-ish.....I can try to remove that army of clamps....and get the case cleaned up?

There IS a longer plank available...
451796
That I think I can cut into 4 sections....and glue up into 2 panels....to make the raised panels for the 2 doors.

At least that is/was the "plan" for today....we'll see..

steven c newman
02-11-2021, 1:25 PM
Wasn't quite long enough for 4 blanks...drat..

The before the clamps came off shot...
451873
SLOWLY....until...
451874
All clamps were removed....Still needed a couple, though..
451875
To hold the case in place, as the pine shelf was a bit too wide (was flushed with the front of the case..)
451876
Needed something to remove the "excess" pine..
451877
See-through shavings, takes a LOT of passes....and, the shavings want to stick to about anything...especially my left hand.

Could finally set the case aside..
451878
What is throwing this picture off...is the legs for that bench behind the case, are splayed, to keep the bench stable.....case IS square...
451880
Which means I can clear off the tablesaw, and set up to do a few rip cuts, need frame parts for 2 doors...
451881
Stay tuned...door parts are next on the list..:D

steven c newman
02-12-2021, 2:04 AM
Was a busy day...off and on...
451911
These needed jointed...
451912451913
Tapers were ripped straight...waves planed flat...until..
451914
Until 2 panels could be glued up, and set aside...

Decided those 7/8" thick stiles and rails could be thinned a bit, to 3/4" thick....and even removed a few bad spots along the sides..
451915
Will sort through these tomorrow, pick out the best 4 stiles...and see about enough rail stock....and set up a Stanley #45 to do a bunch of grooves...and MAYBE some beads?

Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
02-12-2021, 5:58 PM
Sorted through...even found 2 decent long stick s to make the 4 rails out of.
.451970
also sorted through the rest for 4 stile blanks..
451971
Most needed a little jointer work...Also worked on a jig...
451972
that will come in very handy...still needed a couple notches cut...
451973
Stiles needed to be all the same length...best way to do that,,,
451974
just gang them up...one pass on each end. Set up the plough plane...have work for it..
451975
The cutter is a #12...took a few tries to get thing set just right..
451976
Kept that old candle handy...kept things from binding...
451977
And, check for depth of cut...had a few high spots that tried to slip by..
Next up..them rails...

steven c newman
02-12-2021, 6:11 PM
rails were cut to about the right length over on the mitersaw..
451978
A cordless Stanley #358...then adjust that jig a bit...
451979
As the rails are a bit shorter that the stiles....
451980
Did not take all that long to do...or..make a mess on the shop floor..
451981
Between the Jointer and the plough planes....was a Chippy sort of day. next item involved this cutter..
451982
A #22 bead cutter. Had to stop for a bit, as this did need to be sharpened up....bevel and the back...then the plane reset..
451983
Moving skate adjusted out a tad...fence adjust in a bit...depth stop was set up AFTER a test run..
451984
More to keep the cutter from going too deep...then set up the jig..
451985
Was a bit rough at the start....not a biggie, as a mitered half lap will go there....turn the rail around...
And do another bead....stiles and rails all get 2 beads....one around the outside edge, and one around the inside towards the raised panels...

Back was getting sore, right between the shoulder blades.....2-1/2 Hours in the shop.....time to clean up, and close up....plenty of time to do all them beads, later..

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-13-2021, 7:04 PM
Beads on all the rails are done..
452179
Re-adjust the jig. and bead the 4 stiles....until
452182
last of the stiles had their beads done....had one stile that needed to be straightened out...
452183
Was a bit bowed up in the middle...got that flattened back down....
Change of tools..
452185
lay out a few miters...and do a few cuts..
452186
But, only half way down....then another saw took over...
452188
To make a rip cut...
452189
At least on the 4 rails....even set up 2 mitersaws...
452190
One for each end...then that rip saw....
Stay tuned...more to come, was a busy day...
:D

steven c newman
02-13-2021, 7:12 PM
Ok, all the rails have their joinery done? Need to half lap the stiles to match...
452191
Stiles started out like this....but, they need to match up with..
452192
the rails...means a 45 degree cut,,,

452193
Like these ( done on the tablesaw, this time) Then a test fit...
452194
And clean things up until a good match is made....enough that a full frame could be dry fitted..
452195
Both frames are ready for their raised panels...but..
452196
I need to work on the panels just a bit....trim to size, raise the front , need to rebate the back of the panel....

Sounds like another full day in the shop...Stay tuned...:D

steven c newman
02-14-2021, 1:58 PM
Guess I should meander down towards the shop, after a bit.....make a bit of saw dust...

Stay tuned...there may be some cussing involved....doubt there will be any glue spilled, though...

Have to haul the 30 gal. Trash Can to the shop...and clean up under the tablesaw....getting hard to move the saw where I need it to be....may bring in the snow shovel, as well...at least I can find it, later...

Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
02-14-2021, 8:40 PM
trash can is ...full..
452266
As full as I'd want to try and carry back upstairs...

Panels are out of their clamps...flattened and cleaned up ( easier to trim to size, that way)..
452268
One panel wasn't too bad..the other one had..issues..
452269
Jack plane was busy...
452270
Trimmed the panels to size, on the tablesaw....then raised the panels on the tablesaw..
452271
Then the rebate on the inside of the panels..
452272
Tablesaw made two cuts per rebate...handplanes ( #78 and that #71-1/2) to fine tune the fits...
452273
452274
Depending on grain direction....Was a bit too worn out...to try a glue up....maybe Monday or better yet...Tuesday I can get two doors glued up?

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-15-2021, 10:42 AM
Today being a Monday....shop is usually closed on Mondays...Have a visit to the Blood Thinner Clinic this afternoon....finger will be getting poked, again. Will see how that turns out, and how bored I get afterwards, before I see about any glue ups going on...
452303
Not sure IF two hands will be enough....about 24 clamps need to be ready....and 16 cauls...

We'll see....if'n you hear a lot of cussing going on, something was going on

steven c newman
02-16-2021, 4:30 PM
Ok, made a supply of these cauls..
452398
Small...yes, because of where they will be used...
452399
Couple of spots also needed a thin strip glue in-between the 2 main parts of a corner joint....

C clamps also gave a "stand-off" for the rest of the clamps to use..
452400
Door #1 was glued up, allowed to cure overnight....when the clamps came off, happened to recheck how square it tuned out...
452401
Meh...fixable...do better with Door #2....

3rd hand helps out...then I can hold a square in the corner...
452402
Until the cauls and clamp are set..
452403
Turn it around, do the second corner, and slide the panel in place....
452404
And then try the other side.....then add the F style clamps.....
452405
You can see door #1 sitting down on the floor, in front of the cabinet's case.

Stay tuned for Part 2...
:D

steven c newman
02-16-2021, 4:37 PM
Used a few extra clamps...trying to push/pull things to square....I hope....
452406
Let this sit awhile....and sand the first door smooth...
452407
Fill in a couple bad spots...
452408
And try to decide IF this sort of handle is too big....
452409
Not fancy enough ( for a bathroom?) Too small? Waiting on Door #2 to cure, and then see about some hinges.....and what flavour stain to use.....Medicine Cabinet over the sink has a "Golden Oak" sort of look..

Stay tuned...:D

steven c newman
02-17-2021, 12:06 PM
Maybe, once Lunch is settled...I can go to the shop, and work on Door #2? Remove the clamps, clean it up...that sort of thing? Need the case to get up off the floor, and the doors hinged...we'll see how things go..

steven c newman
02-18-2021, 8:43 AM
Door #2 is out of the clamps...
452486
Even the inside looks good..
452487
Laid both doors up on the case...
452488
Something wasn't quite right.....turned out the case itself was out of square....so, NOW I need a plywood back panel, to pull it into square....glue and screw sort of thing...

Hinges on door #1 have been mortised in place..
452489
Door #1` has been installed...
452490

Waiting on the plywood panel, before Door #2 is installed...

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-19-2021, 9:03 AM
Plywood has been bought, and trimmed to size. Screws were bought as well....Set a factory corner up at the top...and see which way the case needs to be pulled into square...glue and screws along one edge
452576
Center line of screws was added after the next step was done.....grab a big pipe clamp...
452577
And PULL...until that gap closes up....or the plywood edge is even with the bottom shelf...then glue and screws to keep things in place....including the bottom and middle shelves. Flip the case over...
452578
And check how well the doors line up. Hmmm, much better than they were....Need a pair of holes drilled..
452579
To install a towel bar....then work on Door #2's hinges.....must have gotten a bit rough at one point....latch stile had come loose  So, I had one more repair to do, after the hinges were done..
452581
Yep....one those days..
452582
Close up shop, call it a day. need to shop for a latch that will FIT across both doors, that works, and not look like a big clunky lock from a bank...:(

Need to sand the entire cabinet down to 220 grit....and mix up a batch of stain....need to install the shelf bracket under the top of the case....a second one is place at the bottom, on the wall first. Case is to be set on the bottom bracket, plumbed up, then the top bracket will get screwed to the wall....

Stay tuned....still a week to go...:D

steven c newman
02-19-2021, 6:48 PM
Hmmm, clamps came off, just long enough for me to drill a pair of holes...then they squeezed two knobs into place..
452623
Let these sit a bit....while I get other items set up....later, clamps came off..
452626
Roughly centered...MKII Eyeball. Had these two items...
452627
neither of which would fit, nor look right....have these, though..
452628
One per door...
452629
mark and start the holes for the screws...
452630
Install the magnet part, close the door to set where the plate will go..
452631
Install the plate. repeat for the other door....

Next..
452632
These will be installed, so I can then screw through them and into a wall stud...one problem...
Stay tuned to find out :D

steven c newman
02-19-2021, 7:05 PM
Ok..a problem with installing one of the hanger brackets....bottom bracket was fine, easy to get to..
452633
Attached to the underside of the bottom shelf...the top hanger bracket goes inside, and underneath the top shelf....

The problem here?
452634
Drills don't fit....Hmmmm, we have ways..
452635
Angle driver...set up with a Phillips bit...
452636
Forgot to do any pilot holes....toke a few tries, and a lot of wax on the threads...but...
452637
The two red "holes" will go through and into the wall stud...right on through the plywood back. Metal bracket insures that the heads of the screws will not pull through the back of the case. Bracket carries the weight of the case.

Intend to spend most of tomorrow doing the Sanding Chores.....down to 220 grit...and see about mixing up a batch of stain.....

Almost time to hang this on the wall

Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
02-21-2021, 8:19 AM
cabinet was sanded with first 100 grit, then 220 grit.....then I mixed a batch of stain up....One stain was way too dark, the other was way too light, and red.....about a 50/50 blend

Then brushed it on the inside..
452698
Trying not to miss anything....
Then did the outside....
452699
Again, trying not to miss anything....including my shirt...

Top of the top shelf...seems to be something going on with the grain...
452700
Letting this dry a day...and see how it looks.....still have the batch of stain stored away,,,just in case I did miss a spot....or have to fix a glue spot....

Then see about a coat of a clear gloss poly....

Stay tuned...:D

steven c newman
02-21-2021, 3:51 PM
had 2 white spots to fix...glue spots...Sanding drum in the Dremel, sanded to bare ( no glue) wood...wipe in some stain....wipe dry....Then one coat of the varnish...allow to dry..

Varnished inside and out...will rub down with some 0000 steel wool later...and see about coat #2..

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
02-22-2021, 10:41 AM
Coat #2 has just been applied....will see later today about another rub down, IF needed.....May need an extra hand, tomorrow...to help hang and plumb the cabinet in it's new home....There will be a few photos..IF anyone wants to see them....

steven c newman
02-22-2021, 4:11 PM
Varnish rubbed down...cabinet is hung...by meself, BTW..
452839
Unable to bring the tripod along, but....opened the doors...
452840
Thing is heavier than it looks....4 screws holding it to the wall stud...
452841
Close the doors, until the Boss decides what to fill it up with...

This is what the area looked like, before...
452842
I think I improved it?

Thanks for watching..

Turned out nice, Steven. A great improvement on the space. I’m sure it will be appreciated.

Really nice cabinet that fits the space well. I’m always impressed with your dispatch. You complete projects before I can clear my bench.
