Chest lid hardware

Hi all,

I am looking for hardware recommendations for my in progress chest build. Does anyone have any suggestions for hinges and lid stays/supports? Initially, I settled on mortised hinges but I am open to suggestions. I would like to stay away from the gas piston supports because I do not like how they look. Also, I would love suggestions on suppliers. I have looked at the usual suspects Lee Valley, Rockler, BORG, etc. Any others that you have experience with and would recommend? Thanks.

Ball and Ball make some excellent antique reproduction hardware. Not inexpensive but very well made.

Horton Brasses might be another possibility. I've not bought from them but certainly plenty of folks must have considering they've been making hardware since 1936.

Different chests, different hinges. But I will say that the Rockler "Torsion Hinges" are a superb product. They really work well. Of course, the aesthetics may not match.

I have recently used gas struts (gas springs) in a few projects. I can't change the looks and get that you don't want to use them on this project, but... I am letting you know that they are not as intimidating as they might seem. They really work well when you get it installed right. Lots on the web about what and how. Just something to consider, depending on your application. For example, gas struts could be great on a tool chest. Whereas the Rockler hinges are perfect for a toy box.

Thanks for the replies all. As usual, I should have plumbed the depths of the SMC repository before I posed my question! Turns out there are hundreds of related posts...who knew!😏

For what it’s worth, I like (except maybe the price) the torsion hinges from Rockler; however, they are designed for 3/4 stock so they won’t work for my purposes.
