Hi All-
I would like to try out making my own lumber on my new Rikon 18" 10-340. The logs I have around my house are small enough to fit the band saw but my question is: Is it better to quartersaw or plain saw ash and cherry?

Thanks,
Hank

Lots of waste when quarter sawing.
I prefer cherry plain cut. Don't know what ash would look like QSed.

Quartersawing can do nice things for lumber, but the added waste, effort and "required" unique jig to hold the material while cutting the log is a major deal. Quartersawing is also not very practical with the small sized logs you can likely handle on a bandsaw that small...very little material will get produced.

Steve and Jim are right.
You need min 16'-18" of log to quartersaw.
But you will get few Rift and quartered boards
if you plainsaw.
Another way to get 100% R & Q and with good yield
is to make (4" thick slabs ) that you can 'dimentional' resaw to R & Q.
(if you can use 4" strips)

Have fun.

Yes I looked at quartersawing on my resaw bandsaw, but the amount of wood that would be wasted was too much for me, them logs come dearly here in Tokyo.

You really do need BIG logs to get anything of size out of quartersawn.

The Ash looks nice quartersawn, I've done some raised panel doors in quartersawn Ash.

Cheers!
