what is the timer for? Does that keep it running for a certain amount of time before shutting off? Or does that mean it's going to start up on its own?

It's a countdown timer - the collector will run for the amount of time displayed and then shut off. I replaced the timer in mine with a Long Ranger remote. Much more useful for me.
