I need to make a tote and knob for a Stanley #40 that I got, it didn't have a knob or tote. I have the LV patterns for #3,#4, and #5 will any of these work?

Hi Robert,
It is a little late right now but maybe tomorrow this can be checked by comparing my planes.
The #5 will not work since it has a toe screw.
The #3 would more likely be the right size.
The #40's knob and tote are made of beech instead of rosewood. There are exceptions > http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan5.htm#num40

None of my LV planes have handles that are in any way like a Stanley plane handle. Completely different.

I made a knob / handle set for a #40 by using the LV pattern for the #4 bench plane. They fit perfectly. I recall that that handle pattern was a little difficult to find, but the shape and fit was a perfect duplicate of the Stanley.
Look here for the pattern: https://assets.leevalley.com/Original/10090/56664-stanley-number-3-and-number-4-plane-tote-c-07-e.pdf

You can cut one with a saw to rough shape and and shave it to finish with knife and sand paper.

One tip, drill the bolt hole before any cutting or shaping. It will make the whole process easier.
