Does the super dust deputy (5"/6" ports) provide reasonable separation of planer shavings?

My christmas surprise (to myself) was completely packing my dust collector filter... twice. It's a single-stage JET (DC1100) dealing with jointing and planing cedar. The bag got about half full before the filter area packed up. I haven't had this much trouble with planer shavings before -- seems like they are a bit lighter than what I've worked with previously so they stay up in the filter region a bit longer. Sawdust and heavier shavings haven't been much of a problem (other than the usual struggles of trying to get enough airflow at tools that aren't designed to collect dust real well)

My DC is the 2hp HF pulling through a super dust deputy and exhausting outside. When it is picking up planner shavings I never see any outside. So I would say it separates them well. I see a LOT of shavings in the home made box under the cyclone. The planner and jointer fill my collection box by far the fastest. Saws and sanders produce a lot less volume of material. The cyclone seems to get a lot of the dust too but I do see a little outside - so it is not getting all of it. But that is expected.

I have the same dust collector, I believe. I have it converted into a two stage with a super Dust Deputy XL.

I use it, one tool at a a time, for my SawStop, Hammer A3-31 (12" planer/jointer) plus a few other tools. The J/P definitely creates the most volume of shavings as opposed to sawdust from most of the other tools.

I have about a 40 foot run of 5" metal tubing and use 10' 4" flex hose to to the machine.

Planing a wide board, I find the 6" hose, between the bottom of the cyclone and the first stage bin, can clog it I don't keep an eye on it.

With the inside of this small section of tubing getting quite dusty inside, it makes it difficult to see if this clogging is starting to happen from 15'-20' feet away. So I got this little tip to backlight the tube. This helps me to see the shavings falling out of the cyclone.

Have you considered the idea of putting a Thien baffle into the ring of the DC? His web site features several units so converted.
