Finishing Secretary desk

I’m about half way done building a Secretary deck with lots of pigeon holes. Trying figure out the best way to finish it. I like Shellac but don’t believe it’s a durable enough finish for a desk. Lacquer maybe, I have never used any of the water base finishes. Also to bush or to try spraying, I bush better then I spray. Ideas??
