Got these two items in a box at an auction and was wondering if anyone knows what they are/do:
First is a flat piece of black steel (appox. 3" x 8" x 1/4") which has two threaded inserts near the middle. One edge is chamfered and the center has a slot machined in it.

Second item is some type of stop. My guess is to a mortiser but figure I'll defer to someone with more expertise.
