I'm having trouble finding the black splinter guard for my Festool guide rails. I can find the clear plastic type, but I like the black style better. Every time I think I've found it, I discover that it's actually the non skid strip and not the splinter guard. Help would be appreciated.

Did not know that guard was once black. I think I would prefer that as well. Looking forward to seeing if someone has a lead on it.

What I like best about the old black splinter guard is that it is non skid as well, so it helps hold the narrow workpieces in place.

After replying, I googled around a bit and found this thread on the Festool Owners Group forums. Don't know if you came across this or not.

https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/festool-tools-accessories/rail-splinter-guard-color/

It mentions that some people are using Makita replacement guard strip which is black.

All of my tracks have the black splinter guard...I guess that shows they were not recent purchases. LOL

I have and use the makita rails and splinter guard replacement. It might work

It does. I was going to post this :)

It sticks better than the clear newfangled ones too.

Thanks. Just bought 2 of the 118” ones to try out. Hopefully, they’re the same thickness of the Festool ones.

Derek,

Would you please post the results when the new Makita splitter guards arrive and are in use. I need new ones on two of my tracks, but am tired of fighting with the clear ones not staying put.

I always buy the Makita. Better splinter guards IMO and work just fine on Festool rails. Cheaper, too (I think).

Yep, they're cheaper as well.

How do you remove old glue after removing old guard?

Also 3M Adhesive Remover.

I buy the Dewalt strips. They are black, easier on the eyes and much more affordable.

Yea , but is Derek likely to have that already ? Plus, it's double the cost and harder to find.

I peeled off the clear splinter guards that were coming off at the ends, washed the rail and guard with laquer thinner and reattached them slightly further out on the rail using Nitto double sided tape #512. This is the same tape that is used on the Makita guard strip and also used to attach badges and trim on cars. It doesn't fall off.

When recut the reattached strips as as good as new ones and no longer lift off on the ends. This would also work well for those that wish to retain the black strips.

...it's double the cost..

But works 20X as fast on removing adhesive. 3M Adhesive Remover is a must-have around the shop.

If all you’re doing is removing adhesive all day everyday, sure.

For a once in a while activity , I’ll bet Derek is not going to buy any - and be just fine without it.
