Hi,
Someone recommended I try the Minwax Antique Oil Finish on my old redwood paneiing. (I have some scrap pieces to test with.) After I put on a coat and wait 5-10 minutes, it says to buff it evenly with a clean rag. I know this sounds dumb but what does buff mean - rub lightly, rub hard, just wipe off gently, something else? Thanks

This is a wiping varnish-oil so you want it to soak in for a bit and the "buff" off any excess. Subsequent coats will no longer soak in so you apply lightly and "buff" lightly. So.."rub lightly".

A lower number of applications will result in a more matte, natural finish. If you put on a lot of coats...like 12-15, the sheen will gradually increase.
