Was at the antique store yesterday and i found a Stanley 45 in the original box. Its missing the fence but i think ill be able to find a replacement. They were asking $75 but with the 20% deal they were running i got ut for about $60.

I also picked up a screw turner, a saw set, and a vintage hammer bringing the entire bill to $75 with tax

Looks like a good deal. Finding a fence on ebay shouldn't be too difficult. You may want to get a later fence for the fine adjustment feature. Be sure it has both screws:

442504

The first design of the adjustable fence had the locking screw above the adjusting screw. It didn't work well. Avoid the early design or fences without the locking screw. After the slitter it is the most commonly missing part on a #45. After that the 1/8" blade may be the third most missing part.

The shorter box of blades has raised my curiosity. It looks like the long box may be original to your plane but the short box may be for another plane.

Can you post some pictures of the short box and its cutters?

I was kind of curious about those. A few are stanley cutters but the rest have a weird line in them

The ones with lines on them look like they may be for a Miller's Patent plane > http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan5.htm#num42

Those are likely worth more than you paid for the everything.

Search > miller's patent < on ebay

3 Stanleys...the ones with the grooves done the back....older, wood bodied plough planes with the steel skate....the skate was ground to a knife's edge, and the grooves rest there...helped center the cutter on the skate, and keep it there....one ( the wide one) is a tongue cutter for a match plane....the other plane would then need to plough a groove to fit the tongue...

Cutter does have a groove down it's back...metal skate was ground (by G. Roseboom, in 1864) to a knife edge....helped align the cutter to the skate...

I agree with Jim, those do look like Millers cutters.

The boxes are always interesting, I have a complete (slitting blade and all) early 1900s #45, and I have two small boxes.. not one large one.

A quick Google search and Jim was right. I have 4 cutters though not 8

Mike,

Your box is in better condition than mine. Thats a nice looking plane.

I was able to find a fence online and its on its way. It even has the threaded post for the knob i have. Should be a good plane

Hmmm...mine came with a different type of box...

Where the cutters sat in slots on one end of the box....Type 20, from Roxton Pond, QUE., Canada....has the SW logo on the skate.

Jason,

Ya did good! On the auction site, the original boxes like that sell pretty well, just the box, not including the plane.

Once you get one one more of the short rods and the fence you will probably have a complete plane. Be sure you buy one of the fences like jim wrote about above, much handier than the type without the adjuster knob.
