If you could make only one more project, what would it be? Or maybe another way to explore this would be to ask, what is your method to decide on the next project? Do you build things that you or your family needs or things that just strike your fancy? Where do you get your inspiration? Sorry, that’s a lot of serious questions!

If it truly was my last project it would have to be my coffin. At least it would be my last chance to convince people at my funeral I did some cabinetry!
I can hear them now “you know he made his own coffin“.

I would say the majority of my projects were motivated by a need within The family or a desire to bless someone with something unique and hand made. Nearly every room in the house has at least one piece that I’ve made: Cabinets, book shelves, beds, night stands, tables. My wife is a quilter. I made her a blanket chest several years back that is filled with quilting supplies. This was followed by a large sideboard that we call the sewing notions cabinet. Also filled with quilting supplies. I like antiques in the Shaker and Craftsman style. I often take pictures of pieces in antique shops of pieces I hope to reproduce some day. I was late to discover hand tools. I’ve yet to do a complete hand tool build. I am definitely looking forward to gaining more experiences with hand tools. I want to make a shaving horse and a spring pole lathe, and then use those to make some chairs, maybe even a rocking chair. I made an axe handle a few years back and loved using spoke shaves and draw knives on that project. I still remember a beautiful walnut rocker that Prashun Patel made years ago, a very elegant piece. I am definitely inspired by the work done by many of the folks who post here.

Since it would be my last it would be a gift to a younger family member. Have been thinking about an apartment dweller's workbench. Looks like fine furniture, works like a mule. Have sketched a couple designs, about 24" x 50" x 30" high. Vise options are great fun to dream up.

I still very much want to do my take on a hallway/sofa table. We finally moved into a house that has a place for one and as soon as the shop is back up I will be taking after that. My other bucket list item may seem humble but, they have a grip on me for some reason; chimney cupboard.

As to what to make next, the need or commission drives that. I've done a fair amount of 9 drawer dressers. Mirror and picture frames oddly enough(?). For the new house I am looking at a bedroom set and a buffet for the dining room. If I live long enough, a set of chairs for a family handed down dining table. LOML has waited patiently for a tricked out walk in closet and a blanket chest for the foot of the bed and a vanity will wrap up in there somewhere.

If you're looking for inspiration, Christmas is right around the corner. The shop can always use a new or version 2 cabinet or fixture. Relatives have kids and need changing tables, dressers, toy boxers, etc.

If I were to make one last project it would be to make up boxes & skids to package all my woodworking equipment & tools so that someone would have what they need to carry out their desire to pursue woodworking.

With a long list and at my age it will be whatever happens to be at the top on that day. It’s like asking me when I’ll stop buying tools. When the day comes I’m sure UPS will deliver for at least a week after my big day.😃
