Smart Fill tool

your cdr is newer than my x4 so I can't open it. But win7 does show a tiny thumbnail of it so

if Smart fill doesn't work (never does for me), set your nudge/jog for a larger nudge than the logo is wide, then make a duplicate of the one, and jog the duplicate off to the right. Select the copied logo, and ungroup AND un-combine it. Now select the whole logo, and make everything hairliined black and no color. Make a copy of THAT, and nudge IT to the right. Now remove the big star from the first copy so you're left with the only the outer rings with the text and small stars. Select it all and COMBINE. Now, pick a color and paint it. The words and small stars should remain 'hollow', with your new color around them. Now remove the color from the outlines. For the second copy, remove the outer ring and the text and small stars, and remove the AZ from inside the star, remove the colors and leave a black hairline. Now select the star and the inner outline, and COMBINE them. Now choose a color and paint it, you should have a hollow star with color between it and the inner ring. Remove the color from the outline...

now jog the new painted copies on top of the original -

hopefully smart fill will work, it's easier, but this is how I do it...

Yea smart fill doesn't work at all . maybe cause of the layers. I might have to start from scratch agai:(n

well I started all over from scratch LOL think I might have it. I'll upload the cdr in a older version so you can take a look at what I have now.

Basically, you need to ungroup and break apart. I've attached a file that I tweaked a bit.

Mike This will not open in CRD something about missing fonts , I tried to use exceptions but still will not open.

I have version X6 and was able to open your first file named "PGR Star 1". I was able to use the SmartFill tool just fine when I clicked in the white space between the large yellow star and the inner circle. While looking in Object Manager, you have 5 objects grouped together. You can try ungrouping those and see if SmartFill works. If that doesn't work, try breaking the text apart from the circles and if that too doesn't work, try converting the stars and ellipses to curves and then try the SmartFill tool.

I don't see any cause for the SmartFill tool to fail on this design, but if all else fails, use your PICK tool to select 2 items and then select Create Boundary. That should eliminate any issues and allow SmartFill to work on that object.

Hi Bert,

I like your design, and the group it referes to!

Here's what I did... ungroup the piece, then break the text from the circles and center in space. (I didn't have the same font, this is just what came up.)

The way you designed it you can now click on either circle and change its colow. I did gold and marroon. I thought the blue text might show up better on the cold, but that's my 2 cents.
Now just click on any one thing and change the color.

Have fun!

I'm a Tail Gunner for the Arizona Patriot Guard. I do Funeral Escorts for Fallen Hero's,( Active Duty, Veterans and First Responders) this is all Voluntary. I use my car at the rear of all funeral processions to protect the procession and all of our Motorcycle Road Guards. Right now I just have magnetic Funeral escort signs on the car doors. We've had some close calls with idiots running past me and almost hitting our Motor cycle guards. I was thinking a sign like this with a big gold star might be more effective in stopping people from passing . In Arizona and I think in most states its against the Law to pass a Funeral procession.
We are Licensed by the state and have permits to run Red and Blue Lights and Sirens , but that doesn't stop people from passing.

Try this. Saved as an older version so X5 should open it.

Ungroup. Adjust text, then break it apart from the circles so it can be colored seperately if needed.
Click center circle on its border, click fill color.
Click outer circle on its border. Click fill color.
Done.

When it comes to computer painting, remember these rules:

Rule 1: Anything to be filled with paint must have an inner border, and an outer border.
Rule 2: outer borders cannot be inner borders, and inner borders cannot be outer borders.

A target is a good example, one with alternating red and yellow rings, with a red center dot.

--So draw a circle for the red center, then 4 more circles around it for the rings.
--now paint the center dot red.
--now try to paint the next ring yellow. You'll find it can't be done... because you need to COMBINE the outer ring of the red dot and the next outer ring. But the red dot ring is in use. .

the fix? You need an identical red dot outer ring- unpainted- to use as the inner ring for the yellow. ALL ring borders (except the outermost end ring) must be duplicated in order to be able to paint them...

And guess what SmartFill does? It automatically inserts duplicate borders and adds the paint you chose.

Try it Bert-- It actually worked for me! Draw 6 or 7 circles to make a target. Use the smartfill tool, pick red, and just click INSIDE the rings (not ON the rings) you want red. Do the same with yellow and paint the alternating colors. Voila, it'll work! And when you're done, you'll find you can click and drag each colored ring where you want. Go to wireframe mode, you'll notice every ring has it's own outlines, smartfill automatically created them.

Now I just need to experiment some more my own self! :)

Hi Bert,
Great thing your doing, keep it up.

Some versions of Corel won't smart fill Circles that have been used for Fit Text to path, so always have real circles separate from the Fit to Path arch for the text.

I would always duplicate the circles and have the text use them, leaving the real circle for fills.

Some inner character space would make text a lot more readable, and perfectly centered top to bottom in the circles by adjusting from path.

See attached, edit as needed. Hope this helps,

Cad

Bert, thanks for serving/giving the way you do. We have patriot riders here. I often do memorial dog tags for their rides. Great group, great cause. Kudos to you.

Where have you been all my life, Kev? :)
I've spent who-knows-how-many hours duplicating lines and combining so an area can be filled.
Thanks!!!

Hi Larry
There a Program called the Missing In America Project or MIAP Maybe you could engrave some dog tags for the Urn's of these hero's also. Idone many over the years. Heres a link if you'd like to help https://www.miap.us/
Contact your local Chapter.

Hey-- I just barely figured it out myself, and I've been using Corel for 18 years! I've always been so frustrated with some of Corel features- like Smartfill and powerclip- that I just find workarounds. I just barely noticed when I got the circles to smartfill that they now had borders! http://www.engraver1.com/gifs/banghead.gif
--Smartfill STILL does some weird stuff, like one accidental button click and EVERYTHING is BLUE!! or RED!!

This is exactly why I like to help out, I keep accidentally learning things ;)

I thought "now that I know how this works, it'll be piece o' cake to send this lady some graphic samples of the plates she wants!

I painted the text 'gold'-
then SmartFilled the border 'gold',
then SmartFilled the background black...
