How tall should the fence be for resawing?

I have the Rikon 10" bandsaw and would like to try and resaw some material and was wondering if the stock fence is tall enough for 5" stock.

The 10-305 is a great little machine but, the fence never worked well due to no milling of the rear table edge where the fence locks. The 10-306 took care of this by moving to a t-square type fence. At any rate, I just milled a scrap of poplar and do this. In the tall position it is only 2-5/8" tall but, I have sawn to capacity with it. Slow and steady with a low tooth count blade but, workable.

I would put a sacrificial fence on it that is appropriate to the size you are trying to resaw. It can be done with your fence, but more support is better. Take a piece of MDF and attach it to your fence. That would make a world of difference.

At least 1/2 the height of the board.

I have the Craftsman version of the Rikon 10-305 and I'm not sure if you can resaw a 5" board. I believe the max resaw is 4 5/8" both from my own experiences and the Rikon website.

Edit: Oops, OP didn't say 10-305, 10-3061 will resaw a 5" board. Taller the better, IMHO. You can add a MDF piece to the stock fence if you feel the stock height isn't working for you.

I don’t use a fence and it comes out fine. Just draw a line on top and follow it carefully. Easy with a wide blade. I am re-sawing 5/4 so it’s stable on the table. Just did some 11 inches.
But I forgot that you might be sawing something thinner.

I did a 6" diameter log a week or two ago on my Inca 10" bandsaw. Had to plane some parts down to get it through. I used the stock fence with a 6" tall MDF addition. I used deck screws to attach some more 6" MDF to my log and ran that along the fence. Once I was down to the final cut I switched to shorter screws to avoid blade interference.
