Rust hunting today...brought a few "trophies" home...
440409
$1 Estate Sale saw...D8 Panel saw..
440410
Details ( need to soak the wood in BLO for a while...)
440411
Most of the rest....the #3 size is a Sargent VBMc. Methinks the Stanley #4 is a Type 17? Craftsman Jack was made by Millers Falls...( parts plane) A pair of nail sets, a divider, and another gauge..about..$14 sitting here..
440412
No rust here...$3.50 total...
440413
Big pocket knife will need a clean up...

West Liberty, OH. is having a Tractor Fest this weekend....besides a lot of tractors, there are a lot of vendors...yes, I was wearing a mask...

Just got back from Lowes...needed a new 6" brass wire wheel for my grinder. Question is....which cloth wheel to remove? Intend to sharpen a few things up.....do I leave the firm wheel on, or the "soft" one?

Have removed the white wheel, for now. Brass wheel has taken it's place. Outside caliper and the PEXTO dividers have been cleaned up...all parts that need to move, are now moving..on those two...

May start on either the #3 or the #4 tomorrow...had enough fun for today....

The caliper has a CWF stamped into both outside faces....owner's name?

The PEXTO divider is an 8" model....

Steven, I am curious what you do with all these tools? Sell them on? Collect them?

Regards from Perth

Divider and caliper cleaned up..
440424
All parts can now move.
440425
Owner's? C W F?
440426
PEXTO ..Madein USA 8

Sargent No. 408 has been torn down...wood has been oiled up, base is soaking...
440428
Has SARGENT right behind the front knob, and 408 in front of the rear handle. brass nuts do not have a "waist".
440429
Hardware has been shined up...and a start at sharpening the iron has begun. Will finish this tomorrow...then on to the Stanley....

Hmmm...Hyperkitten seems to think the Stanley No. 4 is a Type 20....was just wondering when did Stanley use a yellow paint in the STANLEY logo with a nickel plated finish?

Handles are black painted hardwood.
Base has a dark blue colour.
Lateral is the post 1962 folded one piece.

Yoke is a steel 2 piece thing. Needs to soak a while, before I tear it all down...
Grinder does have the wire wheel installed...
440448
Looks like it will get a work out...

I have benefited from his kindness, both in terms of equipment and in help in making some things work that just simply defied me.

Some of the items I passed by..
440463
The two #4 plane wannabees...one with the steel frog...the other is a Sears/Handyman....I was going to come back and pick the Stanley No. 5....somebody beat me to it ($15..)
440464
Sorry, already have a decent vise...
440465
Not really into drawknives, at the moment..
440466
Even folding ones...
440467
Expensive box....just to get that LONG extension...
440468
Meh....$35 a saw?
440469
These two jacks were $27 each....don't ask about the block plane...(ouch!)
440470
Already have a saw vise...and just had bought a saw on the way to the Fest...$1, Disston D8, 10ppi, 20" panel saw...

To be continued( been watching the neighbor pour a new sidewalk from the handicap ramp...)

The saw I did buy?
440471
Handle details..
440472
Handle will get a good soak in some BLO...should make it a bit more presentable?
440473
Box lots, anyone....some boxes weren't worth digging through...
440474
Thank is what is left of an Ohio Tool Co. No. 05....and a few block plane shaped objects...
440476
Hmmmm....eh...not today, thank you..
440477
I have no idea what this was for...so I passed it by..
440478
Didn't really "appeal" to me...
440479
Didn't have the room, or need for one of these saws...
More to come...

There was a cart full at one stall..
440480
Can't remember IF that is the Stanley No. 4 I bought....seen a few. I had also walked past a Stanley No. 7c....thought I would walk back later...someone else bought it for $15...( already have one IN my shop..)
440481
Careful with those brushes..that brass wire is SHARP...and I have a hole in me thumb to prove it. The angle guide? Still thinking of ways to put it to use...
440482
Don't need this tool chest, nor the roll-around under it...
Now, this was called a Tractor Fest for a reason...even if some just made shingles..
440486
Seemed about half of the usual amount were here, this year...
440487440488
440489440490
Parking and Admission was FREE....weather was great..feet were getting sore..

Iron has been sharpened, chipbreaker mated to the iron....had to hammer-adjust the chipbreaker so it would sit flat...

De-greased the body, and a the frog..Rustoleum Black was applied....waiting on that to dry a while. handles may need another coat of oil finish...we'll see. No rush, today...resting up from yesterday..

6 yard sales walked, plus the mile or so at the fest....even "did Lunch" at the fest.

Have a start to the Stanley No. 4, Type 20 (?) Rehab going on...mostly a tear down...
440493
Handsome, ain't he?
440494
Not black, more of a very dark (royal navy?) blue.
440495
A numbered frog, with a face only a mother could love..
440496
This might take a while...
440497
And me without a can of Brasso...LARGE brass wheel spins well enough...
440498
Yellow logo? Not sure IF it is original to the T-20 planes...

Painted hardwood handles will get a new coat? Or just stripped to bare wood, and given a light coloured finish?
Nothing broken, nor anything cracked...it might be fun to do...

BTW: that Sargent VBM #408c has a righthand threaded depth adjuster wheel...thinking this VBM is from about..1917? Will pair up nicely with my Sargent No.414c VBM Jack plane..

Paint is dry..iron still has a couple pits in the edge...
440500
Will do for now..
440501
So I can start on the Stanley next...
440502
Not too bad looking, for a 103 years old plane?

I have this exact same sargent. My has an interesting quirk though that the casting is thicker on the left cheek than the right.

Might have seen a lot of rubbing against a fence over the past 100 years?
