View Full Version : Palm nailer for tiny nails?

Is there a palm nailer that has a tiny bore for driving panel nails and finish nails?

I find it hard to nail panels to a ceiling with panel nails using just a hammer. Brad driver guns don't use nails with nice round heads like panel nails. Palm nailers with big bores will drive small nails, but the nail has some much freedom of movement inside the bore that the process is by no means automatic.

I did this: find you a bolt or something that just barely fits in the bore: cut it to same length. Epoxy it in. Throw it in your drill press vice and bore it out to the size that works. Make sure you dial your air pressure down accordingly, 30-40 lbs is all you need, 75 lbs will bend the nail in half.

I understand all that except for "Epoxy it in". Is the epoxy used for holding the end of the bolt to piston that hits the nail?

Maybe you could use a pea shooter for vinyl siding for your tough spots?

I don't understand whether that tool fits around much of the nail shaft. Can it be used to start the nail? - or is it only a nail set, something used after the nail has been driven most of the way in?

Ive used them for years driving small nails in tough places. It may be a bit of a sloppy fit for a paneling nail but I believe there are other manual options out there for smaller nails. If Thomas has had success with a palm nailer may be a better option. Having a modified snout machined would seem pretty easy. Ive just always found the control and actuating pressure of a palm nailer to be a bit excessive for wee bitty nails. You might look into a brad driver though they are usually no hammer operation.
