WOW!!

Got my Two Cherries 4 piece wood chisel set from Rockler years ago for the total sum of $59.95. Yes, it was some years ago. But now, that same set is over $164.00 . It's a great chisel set, for sure! But, why such a jump in price ? If I had to buy a new Chisel set today, I frankly can't see spending that much for 4 wood chisels.

Good chisels are around $30 to $40 each so the price you found is not out of market. Some of the super premium chisels, such as the LV PM-V11 chisels, are even more expensive.

Even my beater chisels are worth more than what was paid for them years ago.

Years ago Candy was shown the cost for a set of LN chisels compared to how much buying Buck Brothers and Witherby chisels off of ebay.

She was glad my choice was a more frugal route.

Some of this is likely due to the current economy and the dollar dropping in relation to other currencies. That is especially true for imported tooling.

Another might be more people are buying over the internet and many are looking for the free shipping. Well folks there really isn't much free shipping. Someone somewhere has to pay for the shipping. Vendors may be able to absorb some of the cost. Most will adjust their pricing if possible.

The top notch Aldi chisels, were those sold in 2015 through mid-year 2017. I bought two sets, one for using, the other to fund my retirement.

For some they are an okay chisel and some will sing their praises of them as if they were as good as a Veritas PMv11 chisel.

The most special thing about them is the price.

If one needs sizes other than 8mm, 12mm, 18mm or 24mm it seems they are out of luck or have to grind them down themselves.

yea, I get that... :) It's just that I'm used to Aldi being very much a German grocery chain. We don't have one here, for which I am unhappy.. they do carry things I miss.

Y'know, I bought a set of cheap hardware-store chisels once, (Sandvik brand), and backs turned out to be flat, they hold an edge well, and ended up my workhorse.

Who doesn't? Given our proclivity to accumulate piles of "items", maybe the question should be "Who still uses a VCR?".

For what it's worth, I have a TV/VCR combo, bought 24 - 25 years ago, that, even though disconnected, I just can't bring myself to tossing it (or the nearly 100 VCR tapes in my library).

Yup. I have both VHS and an old Betamax I bought in a garage sale with some tapes. Both work.
