My family was from Northern Michigan and as a kid I spent summers up there. It was a lumber culture, with many things named after the timber industry, sawmills, and the like. My Grandparents got me this book when I was a pup. I ran across it on Amazon and may need to snag a replacement copy.

I still do a bit of roaming through northern MI. A good amount of lumber work still going on. No axe sounds these days. Machine clear cutting and replanting seems the order of the day. 5-10 years later, can make for some excellent grouse/woodcock habitat. There are still quite a few independent saw mills around. Scored some nice white cedar a few years ago on a back road in the middle of nowhere.
