Can anyone tell me what kind of wood this is? It's been in my "bits and pieces" bin for so long, I've forgotten.

Bloodwood or Padauk. Grain looks more like Padauk.

If just pulled from the bin, my first guess, bloodwood, second guess, padauk. If it has been air exposed for a few days or more, reverse ;-) Padauk can be near orange when freshly milled quickly turning a rich red and easing into brown over the years. Boodwood stays pretty red IME. Things like Chakta Kok (redheart) have a more wavy-lengthwise figure.

Thanks. It has been exposed to air for a few weeks, and "padauk" jogs a dim memory.

Can you narrow it to a continent since you do not post location? store bought or found on a tree nearby?
Could it be from an Acacia tree? does it float or sink in water. Dry Acacia will sink, most woods float

No more information than what I gave. I bought it years ago, don't remember when or where. Maybe at a Rockler outlet? It's not dense enough to sink in water.
