There was an Estate Sale, about 10 minutes or so north of me..."Hunting, Camping, And TOOLS!" Last time I went hunting or camping, Uncle Sam was paying me..
Feeding Frenzy when we got there....single lane, LONG, gravel driveway back to the place....House had the Antiques and such inside, in front of the house was all the clothes, hats, and shoes.

Around behind the house was a shed full of fishing items, even a couple outboard motors for your boat. There were a line up of mowers, snowblowers, and other such tools, beside the second shed.
Near where you pay for the fishing stuff, there was a table full of plastic tubs....one for wrenches, one for screwdrivers, one for pliers....and a lot of sets. There was another, almost empty tub, mainly sockets, and ratchets...where I made my first "pick"
437072
Set runs from T-40 up to T-60.....needs a bit of clean up.....
Second shed, was filled with power and hand tools, mainly for a shade tree mechanic....but, there was 6 items I thought I just had to have....
437073
3 @6", 2 @ 18", and 1 @ 12"....with pads! Might find a bit of use for them...

Went to pay for the 7 items, hand was having issues holding them, and was getting heavy....how much? (none had a price on them) "How about $10?" "Sold!" :D Double bagged the mess, and "range-walked" back to the van.....;)

Not too bad of a morning? Sale will still be running tomorrow, as well....

Cleaned up that 6 pc set of bits...
437100
Nothing fancy, just the wire wheel on my bench grinder. Used an 8" 3/8" drive extension to hold each bit....safer for my fingers.
437101
T-40 to T-60...might just come in handy?

Not sure....but I think those Torx bits were also from Harbor Freight? There was a LOT of items from that store....half had never been out of the packages....hmmm?

Clamps have been stowed away with the rest of my clamps....next PayDay, might add to them.....

Another weekend, another Estate Sale....starting to love them....This time, spent $18...Mostly on a Craftsman (Stanley?) Jack plane ($15)
437560
Might be worth that in parts...needed a few small c clamps....they had a few in the 2-1/2" range...@ $0.50 each...
437561
Needs a little clean up? Then, for some reason, I could NOT set this next item back on the table...
437562
About 28" worth of these BIG teeth....marked as 5-1/2...fancy handle too..
437563
From what I can make out of the etch...the "8" is inside of the "D"
437564
Price? ......$1

Yes, I was wearing a mask....this is Ohio, after all...not too bad of a morning? :D

Clean up of the Jack plane.....NOT a Stanley...
437695
Frog was painted red because that is what Sears wanted.. #409 is a Sargent #4 sized plane...it is also used on the 414 Jack planes.
437696
"BL" is also for Sargent...
437697
437698
Might have been during the War, as these were blued steel..
437699
Sole was flat...no cracks nor breaks..
437700
Still need to sharpen the iron...and refinish the handles..
437701
All else is done..
437702

steven c newman
07-27-2020, 7:43 PM
As for the "business end" of the iron...?
437749
"We have work to do.."

Once a certain item gets glued up and set off my bench...I'll see about "Snaggletooth".....

steven c newman
07-28-2020, 7:39 PM
Not sure IF these handles are the correct ones...
437819
But, I will get the flaky old finish stripped off, and something new added.....as soon as there is a bit of room on the bench..

Drill press, old screwdriver, 60 and 220 grit sandpaper......then a couple coats of SMELLY BLO.....knob has been stripped, sanded, and "oiled" up....letting it sit overnight...then rub it down. Rear handle can wait until then. Have too much to move around, to work on sharpening the iron.....

steven c newman
07-29-2020, 5:00 PM
Knob has been cleaned up....
437867
This is after a coat or two was brushed on....while the drill press was spinning the knob.. Have since done the same with a couple wipes with varnish...waiting om THAT to dry, now.

Rear handle will be sanded clean, and then the BLO and then the varnish.....

Then maybe sharpen that iron...kind of needs it, don't you think?
Stay tuned...:D

Waiting on the smelly BLO to dry....rear handle has been sanded clean of the old finish...and the BLO brushed on...

And now waiting til tomorrow to buff these two out..

Looking a little better...

Love those D8 Thumbhole Rip handles!

steven c newman
07-30-2020, 5:31 PM
The before..
437918
Cleaned up, back flat...bolt had a burr removed
437919
Sharpening center?
437920
Then the oil stones...
437921
A COARSE and a 600 grit Medium India...then the Wet-or-dry papers....1,000 grit, then
437922
A 2000 grit...and then the strop...
437923
Rather than a round trip upstairs and back down(jack plane was still upstairs), I used the other Sargent Jack plane in the shop, as a test bed...
437924
Seems to be sharp enough for my shop..
437925
So...$15 jack plane is now rehabbed....

May start on the rip saw, next....when the bench is finally cleared off...
Stay tuned

Ok, while waiting on paint to dry....decided to at least clean the rip saw up....that $1 saw?
438682
438683
Well, removed the brass hardware, wire wheel (out of Brasso..) to shine them up. Removed the handle....paint splots? utility knife to scratch that off. LIGHTLY sand the wood with some 220 paper.. Load up a brush with some oil...wipe the handle down..

New 220 paper ( 2 squares per side) in the sander...first to remove the rust and crud..second to polish the plate. Both side done..add a square of 2000 grit paper and go over both sides of the plate...wipe down..assemble the saw....and..here we go..
438684
handle and Brass cleaned up
438685
Screws clocked just like I found them...
438686
Not a chrome finish, but will do...fully readable etch, too. Tooth line has a slight curve to it..breasted?
438687
Test drive of 8 strokes...starts nicely, cuts fast. seems to be quite SHARP, too..stamped as a 5-1/2..
438688
Compare to my D-115 crosscut....at 26"....rip saw is at 28"...full plate depth, too.

For a $1? I guess it will just have to do..

Not really "Estate Sale" finds, today...

Plastic, hollow handle, holds 4 screwdriver bits, plus the one in the bit holder....$0.50
North Bros. YANKEE No. 41....6 bits in the handle, plus another one installed...made before Stanley bought them out..$0.50

Next Sale:
Goodell Pratt Co. "chef's hat" screwdriver...was sold in a tool set for use on the road. IF the car should break down, the tool kit would help out..$0.25
Square wood handled, "MAC" screwdriver...made for "split nut" removal/install...$0.25
Round, fluted wood handled screwdriver, slot driver. Handle was stained a "FORD" black colour...$0.25
3 metal 2" c clamps...$0.25 each
Stanley No. 20, 8" square...$0.25.....

And that was it for today...spent ...$3 total.
I show off some photos....but...some on here don't like the way my non-"Photo Studio" pictures turn out....just use your imagination ......

Already have most of the tools cleaned up....square was off by an 1/8"....got that fixed. I'd post photos...but why bother..

steven c newman
08-15-2020, 3:06 PM
Photo blitz....
439066
$2?
439067
$0.50?
439068
$0.50....bits store in the handle..
439069
These are from this morning....3 chisels, and a 1/2" Pipe clamp for $3
439070
Has plenty of pipe, at least for my shop..
439071
That handsaw?
439072
Yes, fifty cents for a 26" long, 10ppi, D-8
439073
Total for this weekend? $6.50.....

steven c newman
08-16-2020, 5:40 PM
Ok....that Fifty Cent Saw?
439151
Hardware and handle removed..hardware polished up ( handle later..)
439152
Nickel plated steel bolts. plate?
439153
First was a scraper, even before the handle came off,the 6o grit to clean things up..
439154
From this to..
439155
Followed by 220 grit, and then a rub down with 3in1 oil...Handle was sanded, all the flaky finish removed....new stain applied...saw assembled...and tried out..
439156
Details..
439157
"Etch" was a black silk screened affair....1955...
439158
Screws clocked. saw cuts fairly fast, for being a 10ppi....handle is still way better than the later, plastic junk.

D-8, 26" long, 10ppi ( I counted them..) Cross cut saw.

BTW: that weird looking screwdriver..that looks like a spanner screwdriver? Was/is used to adjust the tappetts in older Chevy 6 cylinder engines....

08-18-2020, 4:41 PM
Then there were these things...
439273
Rust spots, bad edges..sooooo..
439274
Took a while, had to be careful around the 18mm's logo....the 25mm still had it's factory edge....seems to have never been out of it's plastic blade guard....Backs have been flattened, bevels stropped...
439275
Honed at 25 degrees. No extra bevels going on. How sharp? the 18mm was paring end grain pine....I seem to have a small cut on one of my fingers....never felt a thing. Set is missing the 12mm size.

steven c newman
08-18-2020, 5:27 PM
The North Bros. No. 41 drill....had a couple issues....one is a broken spring inside...the other?
439278
The bolt is a replacement (too long) and the hole for the head of the bolt is wallowered out so much...it is even dented the collar above it...

Oh well...for $0.50..I did get a few parts for the other drill...and 7 bits. Maybe divide them up between the 2 drills I already have...as soon as I see what sizes are needed where...

I also found out..I no longer can have Chocolate Chip Mint Ice Cream.....big spike in the Blood Sugar readings.....

steven c newman
08-21-2020, 12:35 PM
Hmmm, another Friday, and yet another Estate Sale to check out..

Didn't need any more...screwdrivers, eggbeaters, drill brace...however...
439482
This did catch my eye..."How much?" $30......$25 is as low as I can go....Well, I'll just set it back down on the table then..and went back to looking around....Another fellow walks up, asks IF I was the guy wanting the grinder? "How about $10?" "Sold!"....then had to lug this heavy thing 1/2 a block to the van...whew..
439483
Not too bad of a morning?
439484
Ya think I'll need ear plugs to run this one?

steven c newman
08-22-2020, 4:59 PM
Day 2 of this weekend's Rust Hunt...since I didn't find any yesterday...
There was a "Barn Sale"....said everything had to go. ( except the barn, of course)
So...lumber was way too much $$$, and some of the other stuff...well...
439558
Couple of screwdrivers caught my eye....I used this tub as a shopping basket...
439559
That's right..3 chisels = $2....the screwdrivers were..free...

Got things home...tore the 3 chisels down....switched a few handles around...throw out a couple bad blades..( one I already had...wanted it for the handle)
Green handled screwdriver needed it's shaft straightened out, both tips needed cleaned up....Sharpened the now TWO chisels I wanted to keep...
439560
Beveled edge chisel is 3/4" wide, has GERMANY stamped onto it's blade. The other is a 3/8" wide firmer/mortise chisel....haven't found any markings on it..yet.

Just a $2 day....
