Well....I did have a stack or two of scraps...
436645
And a couple of Pine boards sitting around, doing nothing constructive
436646
And a couple handy panels of plywood....
436647
That needed a job. Sorted through the Ash scraps....had 11 pieces, tossed out 2...They needed squared up, so they were all about the same width, will worry about the ends, later. Process made quite a it of saw dust...
436648
Then set up the zero clearance overlay...
436649
Used a bit of scrap to center the blade into the middle of the 9 boards...run each through along both edge grain sides....
436650
But, height of cut was NOT enough that a pass both ways would reach deep enough.....had to set up the bandsaw...
436651
Which left that strip to plane off....later. May change out to a wider blade, later....
436652
As I have wider stock to do....at least I have a start.

Seems a couple boxes with drawers have been outgrown. Will see about a slightly larger version....
Stay tuned...:D

Well, the blanks were split on the bandsaw well enough..
436659
So far, so good....should have stopped there, for the evening...but..

The 1x6 ash and the 1x6 Pine were run through on edge....Tried the bandsaw blades....neither felt like working tonight...threw away the 1/2" junk Baosch.....Had issue with the drive wheel system throwing the v belt to the floor...loosen a couple set screws....LARGE (32 oz) ball peen hammer to adjust the shaft a bit to the motor side, crank both set screws back down TIGHT. re-install the 1/4" blade....still not working...so..
436660
First saw was a 5-1/2 ppi Chrome edge saw....had a catch in the giddy-up....one tooth....switched over to the just sharpened D-115, 7ppi.....no hitch in the giddy-up (other than a very tired driver..)
436661
Circled area is where the edges are a bit out of straight...there is a knot to work around, too...Bandsaw blade markings?
436662
Figure I can just plane this mess flat...
436663
Had already started,,, when the blank hopped out of the dogs....and Uncle Sir Charles began hitting my toes and calves.....

Weird part? Bandsaw had zero issues splitting the pine parts. Strange.

Gatorades and water being consumed now...I am soaked....might have actually done a bit of work, tonight? Still have one more 1x5 Ash scrap to rip saw apart....but, not tonight....

Stay tuned...BTW...do NOT buy one of these
436664
As they are JUNK....

May need to take a break for a few days....just spent the last 2 in the Hospital.....Blood Sugar count was 601, and climbing....under control for now (182), and getting settled into a life as a Type 2 Diabetic. Kind of hard on finger tips, right now. We'll see how this goes, for a while...

Take care of yourself. Hope you're feeling better soon.

07-18-2020, 2:41 PM
Sugar count is getting better, I'm feeling a bit better, rearend was getting numb from just sitting, and laying around....decided to test the shop, time limit was less than an hour...
437074
Mostly running these around. #414c, No. 4,T-10, MF No.11
437075
Pine 1 x 6 was in need of some plane work....difference between the tablesaw's kerf, and the bandsaw's kerf.
437076
Made a nice mess, doing 2 Pine slabs, and 2 Ash slabs...
437077
Good thing the planes were sharp.

Tried to split the other 1 x 6 Ash plank...already had the kerf run around. 1/2" blade was tossed, 1/4" was used.....about 3/4s of the way to being done...motor on the bandsaw dies...no smoke, just will NOT move.
Back to the D-115 handsaw....and finished the cut..
437079
You can see where the 1/2" blade tried the cut....then the 1/4" blade, and finally, the 7ppi D-115 finish. Next time to the shop, need to plane this flat, and smooth...

Then we'll see what can be made from these "scraps"....
Stay tuned.

Steven, whenever I have had a pine board with a streak of dark pith and the dark dots around it I usually end up with a future crack or cupping. I hope you have better luck with yours.

BTW, this kind of work is best done in the winter!! Our heat index today easily broke 100.

Shop is down in a basement.

Those wide pine boards may either be a back of a case, or ripped in the middle to make the sides of a few drawers. They are also just under 3/8" thick.

Doctor office visits, today and tomorrow.....waiting to find out what they say.....before an Apothecary Style Chest can be made....may not make the August 1st deadline.....oh well....

Stay tuned....:D

Fingers and eyes crossed for a good word!

07-21-2020, 4:10 PM
Get to scale back on the finger pokes.....no new meds.

Tried for maybe an hour today....had a stack of Ash that needed flattened, and a few edges jointed.....got it done...barely, but....Uncle Charles decided to cramp up the toes in the left foot. OW!..
Put a few planes to work, today...
437326

Had the small shop fan blowing right on me, too. Can't use the bandsaw, until I am able to switch out the motors...one died,
437320
have a spare at the ready.
437321
Tablesaw is currently buried under a pile of lumber.
437322

Thinking about a small chest of drawers....drawers being square 5" by 5" fronts of Ash..
437323
.need to work on a case for them....pine for the secondary wood parts. Case parts..
437324
Drawer dividers.
437325

Stay tuned...:D

Ok..short trip to the shop...tablesaw has been cleaned off. some 3/8" x 3/4" strips have been ripped. mainly to thin them down to 3/8" thick.

6 drawer front blanks are now cut to size needed, and squared up.

pieces have been milled to make the 2 sides...need to be glued into panels....

Debate is about the back....Ash? Plywood? Pine? Lid needs glued up into a panel.

May wrap around the base with Ash...covering up a plywood panel...may make feet for the corners.....

No photos tonight..had my hands full carrying the Laundry down the stairs to the shop....may get a few pictures tomorrow...

Stay tuned....

steven c newman

Ah...photos..
437435
Tablesaw cleared for action
437436
6 drawer front blanks...square is for "scale"
437437
Actually, I ripped 3 of these narrow strips....and already used one..
437438
Needed a little extra for the side panels...will try to glue both up tomorrow...
437439
Close match?
Jury is still out on one other panel...
437440
Whether to make this a lid..or a back....and how much to trim away of the knots from the edges...
I think that will do, for one evening....
Stay tuned:D

steven c newman
07-23-2020, 5:15 PM
3 glue-ups today. 2 for the sides of the case, one for a lid. First side went decent enough ( tease..)
437480
Issue with one of the cauls....set this one aside...started on #2 side.....filler strip down the center needed thinned down a bit, and one edge needed jointed ( a little rough) Cauls even behaved better..
437482
(need to invest in more 2" and 3" c clamps...)...set this aside, as well...

Lid: Now the cussing can begin...edges needed jointed...until a no gap line appeared...was a spot right on the end of one board..grrr. Rub joint...glue bead, then moosh things around....stayed put for..3 seconds...
Addeda caul at one end, then tried again....then a few more clamps...had one clamp that wanted to keep sliding off the edge....grrrrr...finally...
437483
This is the underside of the Lid. once the glue is dry, I'll trim the edges to remove them knots, plus whatever else is needed..length and width. the "Show" side?
437485
Should be easy enough to clean up...later.

Sorted through the 6 drawer front blanks...looking for 3 that matched each other...
437486
These will be the 3 lower drawers. There will be 3 upper drawers...but they will need ripped a bit...
437487
Hopefully I can rip a straighter line than I can draw.....above these 3 will be a storage compartment...so a "floor" will be right above these shallow depth drawers.

Bottom panel and the back will be 5/16" plywood. Front of all the drawer dividers will be Ash strips...with pine behind them. Drawers will ride on the pine "floors" at both levels.

That be the plan..so far....nothing on paper, yet.
Stay tuned....:D

steven c newman
07-24-2020, 3:20 PM
Sides came out of the clamps...used them to size the plywood bottom...along with the drawer fronts..
437521
Laid out for the dividers...
437522
A look at how the front will (hopefully) look...
437523
And got the parts for a back sized..
437524
2 glue-ups today...one for the floor of the compartment...(Ash)
437525
And another panel for the upper drawers to slide on...
437526
This will get an Ash strip along the front edge, as it will show.

Maybe tomorrow, I can either lay out all the shallow dados and grooves, and rebates.....or....work on a few Box Joint corners....

Spent one hour IN the shop, today....waiting on glue to dry again..
437527
Lid could come out of the clamps? Need to cut it to size, later.....

Stay tuned...

What are you making Stephen?

steven c newman
07-25-2020, 12:15 AM
Just a little lidded box...with a few drawers....

Don Kingston
07-25-2020, 6:38 AM
I don't see photo's of laundry as promised.

steven c newman
07-25-2020, 1:14 PM
Careful what you ask for....
437565
I have to share the space in the basement with the Laundry Room....

steven c newman
07-26-2020, 2:25 PM
Taking a LUNCH BREAK...have about 2 hours IN the shop today...dados, rebates...and another woodworking things.....film at 2300 hrs.

Need a BIGGER fan down in the shop...that little thing just ain't getting it done...

steven c newman
07-26-2020, 6:05 PM
Second 2 hour session is done..I'm whopped....and a bit out of shape, it would appear....
Both glue ups came out of the clamps...Pine was easy to plane flat...the Ash?
437675
had to come in from the other direction....next A couple corner joints...
437676
Case side to the case bottom connection...Back of the case used a little different joint..
437677
Next was a dado ( or 10..)
437678
Goes between the upper and lower drawers....
437679
To (almost) match the 2 dados in the bottom of the case ...
437679
This got 4 dados...was a bit thin...
437680
More dados...lots of parts getting milled...did a big dry fit,,,to see how the back will fit to the case...
437681
It didn't...because I needed two more dados milled....
437683
I think that should do it....
More to come...stay tuned:D

steven c newman
07-26-2020, 6:19 PM
Dados..make a few cuts with the tablesaw ( depth and width ) then clean them out with the 71-1/2
437684
This is the plywood panel for the bottom of the case...lay out line were correct...cuts were on the wrong face....design change! there is now a slight step at the bottom of the case.
437685
Ooops. No biggie.
437686
Arrow points to an Ash filler strip that will cover the pine edge...Dry fit to also cut the dividers that go between the drawers...why the double dado above...Ash panel for the compartment floor also has a pair of shallow dados....Around the top, will be Ash...so...had to size 2 strips to about the right size..
437687
One in Front, and this one in back ( better to grip the hinges for the lid)
437688
This is going to be...."fun" come glue up time....
437689
Have to keep an eye out for square...once the assembly begins....

That's enough for one day...I'm whopped. Maybe tomorrow I might get something done?
Stay tuned :D

steven c newman
07-27-2020, 2:17 PM
Too sore today. Mondays and sharp objects do not play well in the shop.....think I'll sit this one out. Maybe when Tuesday blows in....
437742
Supposed to be a larger version of this 2 drawer chest...with 6 drawers....

Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
07-28-2020, 7:36 PM
Case is in the clamps....
437817
9 pieces in one glue up....
437818
Will let this sit, and quietly walk away....and hope it doesn't blow up.....will see how it turned out tomorrow.....

steven c newman
07-29-2020, 4:50 PM
Took half of the clamps off...and paused while I put them away..
437863
Nothing flew apart...took the rest of these clamps off. Needed a small part cutter cleaned off..
437864
So I could make a few parts to build up a face frame....and glue the parts in place...

437865
The reason the rest of the back wasn't attached today...clamps needed a way to clamp to the back....from the middle of the case.

I also added the final side to the "box top"
437866
Waiting on glue to dry, again....at this rate, it will be August before I start on the 6 drawers....
Stay tuned....

steven c newman
07-30-2020, 5:34 PM
Plywood back has been installed...
437926
Needed big cauls to span to the side.
437927
Will let this sit a day...
Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
08-01-2020, 12:15 PM
Back has been cleaned up along with the rest of the box's sides....decided to add a base to the box...
438054
Needs feet for in the front...may get a bit fancy, there....
Tablesaw was set up to rip parts for the drawers....mainly the 3/8" thickness....blade at full height...
438055
Bandsaw is still down...how to safely finish this cut....can't access the bench vise....hmmmm...
438056
Set the saw blade down into the kerf....about a dozen strokes of the saw later...
438057
Saw lands on the wooden deck, cut complete...problem?
438058
Miter saw is thinner than the tablesaw's blade...not a biggie, a few swipes with a smooth plane to flatten things out...

More rips and cross cuts...working on getting drawer parts milled to size..
438059
2 sides per drawer front, and making sure they all slide in.
Waiting on the glue to cure...stay tuned:D

steven c newman
08-02-2020, 4:27 PM
Clamps came off, today (again..)
438164
Spent about an hour...ripping, crosscutting, rebating, and a dado or 12...
438166
Sides need two different sized rebates...one for the back to sit in..
438167
Front was a bit more involved...
438168
Then glue nails and clamps...
438169
Needed a small pilot hole drill bit, for the nails..
438170
ran out of the smaller clamps....still have two more to assemble..
438171
Figure while I am cleaning up the first four, I can get the last 2 assembled...
438172
At least the case is square...

Picking dried glue off me fingers....stay tuned...

steven c newman
08-03-2020, 8:47 PM
4 drawers are out of the clamps, and sitting in the case..
.438257
Last of the 2 drawers is in the clamps..
438258
Until tomorrow. Filler strips were added to the case...
438259
Then did a little lid work...
438260
Trimmed for length, width, and the ends squared up...
438261
T&G for the bread board ends...
438262
Think 3 clamps will be enough....

Not too bad, for a Monday....2 hours IN the shop

Stay tuned...Have ordered the handles and other hardware...waiting in those to arrive..:D

steven c newman
08-04-2020, 9:48 AM
Just a little tease, for now...too many things to do, this morning
438287
438289
Maybe more later today...

steven c newman
08-04-2020, 8:03 PM
Motor on Bandsaw was replaced, today. And, that was enough for one day...

Molding last night was cut with a mitersaw....90 degrees and 45 degree cuts..
438353
Used a pine backer board....back of the molding did have a rebate( wainscot cap rail)
438354
Worked from around Midnight last night to around 0100 hrs this morning...
438355
Bandsaw is needed to cut a few corners, and make a lift handle on the front edge...
Waiting on hardware to arrive at my mail box, this week....handles, hinges and other parts...
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
08-05-2020, 3:35 PM
Ok...Got the motors switched out...this one..
438442
Will not run...and the bearings seem to be shot...to be replaced by the motor that came with the saw when new..
438443
That I had taken off during the overhaul last year...and kept it around as a spare...

Need to draw a few curves on the lid...might just have the toys to do that..
438444

Hardware has just arrived in the mailbox....parts are sold by Hobby Lobby On-line only.. I tend to shop the Woodpile brand of hardware....

Looks like we have work to do....stay tuned

steven c newman
08-05-2020, 8:38 PM
Ok...Before this thing get stuffed with tools..
438462
That baggie has the new hardware in it...Top was being planed flat, and as smooth as I could..
438463
Then the corners were marked up..
438464
Even the french ones....
438465
Then the repaired Bandsaw did it's thing...
438466
There was some debate as to which would be the front...Hinges?
438467
I figured 2 would be enough...maybe..Handles?
438468
Kind of fancy, for a tool box...
So...
438469
May need a chain for the lid?
Almost done....

steven c newman
08-06-2020, 2:17 PM
Have a fresh 1/2pint can of Minwax "Gunstock" stain, and a supply of brushes....might use both after Supper...
Chain? Or, no chain?
438504
AND..how to attach one IF I do....

steven c newman
08-06-2020, 9:22 PM
Brushed on, wait a bit, wiped down...allow to dry..
438517
Tomorrow, I can add a coat of clear gloss varnish...
Stay tuned:D

steven c newman
08-08-2020, 3:34 PM
One coat of clear gloss varnish has dried. Chain has been installed to hold the lid open..
438598
Foam pad cut to fit inside the "tray". Label holder has been installed.
Close the lid..
438599
Keep in mind, the lid is only 1/4" thick ( barely)...Front view..
438600
varnish didn't seem to "yellow" things any...
438601
Time to load this up, and put it to work...
438602

For scale...Top of Lid sits 8-7/8" above the bench...is 8" wide at the Finger Lift..and is 17-3/4" long. Still on the look out for a pair of handle for the ends....need a way to carry this, when it gets full..
Thanks for looking in...( was supposed to be done before Aug. 1st....I was "delayed" )

steven c newman
08-09-2020, 1:17 PM
Handles have been bought, they need a little "adjustment" before I can attach them on the ends....otherwise, I'm calling this Project done ( top tray is already full...)

steven c newman
08-09-2020, 4:43 PM
Boring anyone? Handles needed a bit of work...Made to use bolts from the inside of a case/drawer....not an option for this one..Fake screws were ground off on the outside....then a new hole was drilled for the mounting screws ( amazing what a new, SHARP, drill bit can do..)....which left things coloured wrong...decided to paint the handles a gloss black...
438679
Once they were as dry as they will get...2 screws per handle to install...
438680
Going to need them..tool box is starting to fill up..tray is full ( unless I stack a few things..)
438681
Drawers are also filling up....all sorts of small tools, bits....spare parts...Tool Box just might get a bit heavy.

Thanks for looking in..:D
