Here is a maple box I completed recently as a gift. It is made from curly maple and finished with Deft semi-gloss clear wood finish. It was made totally using a table saw. The corners are all locking box joints.

It was made to hold a small bevel plane.

The bevel plane is from plans that were in Wood Magazine last summer. It is made from curly maple, cocobolo and walnut. It also was a gift for a friend. I also made one for myself.

Lee, these two pieces are beautiful! What a great job you did on them, and what a great tribute to some wonderful curly maple! I sure hope the recipient
of those gifts appreciated what fine work went into making them! I really appreciate you sharing them with us!

Sorry Lee, I didn't mention the plane. It also looks great but it just didn't get me all tingly like the box did. Maybe someday I'll be able to make stuff like that.

Lee:

I love the look of that box. I happen to have some curly maple that is just begging me to make a box out of it.

Do you have have plans or a working drawing? I can't really get a scale of the size of the box from the pic.

Jeff.

The box is 3" tall, 7 1/8 long, and 3 1/2 deep. I have a scaled drawing with dimensions.

Lee, the box looks great. The figure of the maple is fantastic. I don't know how you would have cut the wood to get this look, but the I love how the figure from the top matches perfectly with the figure on the side/front. Excellent job.

Gosh, that is pretty. I have always wanted to make that type of joint. Is that difficult? Can you describe the technique quickly or do you know of a website to learn from?
