Hello to everyone!

Can across a posting about this subject but it's dated back some 10 yrs ago. I have an older bench grinder that is missing the right hand threaded nut for securing the stone.
The threads a 1/2-12 tpi. Where the heck can a guy find one of these nuts? Been searching the internet for quite awhile with no success.

What brand is the grinder, and what type threads does it have? Are the threads Acme, square, or V-threads?
All that information would help, as well as pictures of the threads.
1/2-12 thread used to be a standard thread before it was superseded by the present 1/2-13. I have a 1/2 -12 tap, made by the S.W.Card Co.

1/2-12 BSW seems to be common. could it be 55 degree Whitworth threads? Chrysler cars used to use left hand lug nuts on one side of the car. They are a common grinder size maybe 1/2 -13. no idea on thread form.

Some older Rockwell Bench Grinders did in fact use 1/2"-12 Nuts. Some other old Rockwell tools also used the "bastard" 1/2"-12 thread, probably just to force purchase of their repair parts. IFAIK, they parts haven't been available for quite some time.

FYI: 1/2-13 is about the biggest size you can thread with just a regular homeowner hand tap handle. Bigger then that you have to get a much bigger tap handle that the big box stores do not carry. You will have to use lots of tapping fluid and back up often as you go.

1/2" 12 tpi is British Whitworth thread (BSW). They are a buck fifteen at this web site.

. Some other old Rockwell tools also used the "bastard" 1/2"-20 thread.

1/2"-20TPI is National fine, nothing crazy about it. Maybe they wanted more holding power than coarse threads, at work some of the fans we install for one customer use 1/2-20 Nylock jams, now those are "special".
