View Full Version : Grizzly Tools missing??? Bandsaw and Jointer talk

I was trying to look at a G0514 on the Griz site and it's not on the bandsaw page anymore. The 1182Z is missing from it's page as well. Is this because they are out of them? Going to a newer model?

Also, the 1182HW for $315 is now on the Outlet store page.

Are new models coming out for these tools?

What about the new 8" jointer that is rumered to be in magazine ads?

Rikon replaced the 10-340 with the 10-345 and upped the price from $1000 to $1149. Anyone use the Rikon 340? Would the 340 be worth the extra $375 over the G0513?

And would the difference between the Griz G0586 jointer and the G0593 be worth the $370 jump in price? Is it just the cutterhead that is different?

I'm looking to buy these two machines now and I really want a 12" capacity on the bandsaw and the 8" capacity on the jointer. I used to have the 1182Z and sometimes needed more table width. And on my old G0555 bandsaw I had the riser kit but tensioning the blade for big resawing was a big hassle and it was really hard on the saw. For some reason it just wouldn't give me very good cuts on those 18" and 20" half round 6' logs i was trying to resaw. :D

Mark,

I'm just guessing here, but I think Grizzly may be coming out with some new machines, like you mentioned. I've been looking at bandsaws for awhile now. The G0514 was on closeout and, I believe, is done. Same with the 16" bandsaw and the 18". I haven't seen the new Rikon yet, but I hope it's just a little beefier. I've been patient and anxiously waiting for the new catalogue. What I'm looking for is something like Grizz's 18" model but with at least 12" of resaw. Of course, I hope anything new is all Grizzly Green, but they seem to get that annoying off-white on most of their machines now:D. Just kiddin' Grizz, you don't have to send that 1800 lbs. customer service specialist just yet. Maybe just a can of Grizzly Green paint.

Mark,

I just checked Grizzly's website. They now jump from the $775 G0513 to the $1,550 G0566. I gotta' believe Grizzly's going to fill that price-point gap with at least one new machine, and probably more. That's a big gap for Grizzly.

In a review of bandsaws I read that heavy wheels were given good points. I think it was in relation to resawing. In comparing specs between bandsaws, does that mean that cast iron wheels would be better than cast aluminum?

The Grizzly G0570 has cast iron wheels but is a little smaller that the G0513. The G0513 has cast aluminum wheels but a larger resaw capacity and can take a wider blade? I think I really taxed my old G0555 trying to resaw (mill really :) ) with a 3/4" blade.

I wish there was a way to compare the specs of the closeout tools with the new tools now so I could decide to buy now or wait.

Mark,

From what I know, which may not be a lot, the cast iron wheels do make a difference, but not to the point of being a deal breaker. The folks at the Creek who own the G0513 seem very pleased with their saw. For me, I'm more concerned with the tensioning ability. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information about that. I still think I will probably be happy with any of these saws and if my shop were done I would probably just pick one and get on with it. I really like the General International 240. It's the same as the G0513 but with 8 spoke cast wheels, larger fence and larger table. But, it runs $400 more. Not sure it's worth that. We'll just keep looking until the time is right.

John

I think the main 'selling point' for the cast iron wheels is not their strength, but their weight. The extra weight has a 'flywheel effect' wneh resawing. Their greater kinetic energy helps keep an underpowered saw from bogging down. With an adequately powered saw - which most modern saws are - it should make no difference at all.

Strength really isn't much of a factor, since either metal - assuming proper design/construction - is plenty strong enough to handle the stresses and tensions of a saw blade.

I really like the new two tone paint jobs. I don't know if you have seen one of the two tones in person, but the machines really are first class.

John - We appreciate all of our customers.
Okay, I'll throw a little out ahead of time - we have both the G0513 and G0514 series coming out with cast iron wheels and other bells and whistles. They are part of our new "Extreme Series" of machines that are meant to compete against any machines in their class. Green and white. :)

Will that be Jan 1 12:01 am? Or do I have to wait up all night for 8:00 am with the phone in my hand and 10 of the 11 numbers order desk phone number dialed ? I REALLY want to order a saw and jointer.

I gave all the bandsaws the once-over when I stopped by the showroom last August and was looking at the G0514 as an upgrade to by current old 16", but wasn't ready to pull the trigger yet. The 16" was actually my first Grizzly tool, bought from a buddy who was moving back east and didn't want to move all his tools cross-country. It's a good saw but the resaw capacity is limited.

Anyway, I'm eager to give the new models the "once-over", too.

Green and White, eh Shiraz. Well, I guess I'll just have to buy one of your compressors and spray guns and learn to spray paint. Isn't life tough.;)

Seriously, that's great news about your upgrades.

A little correction is in order. We have pushed back the updating of the website to about midday tomorrow due to complexities. I apologize for the delay.
