Note: I also posted this in OWWM...

I purchased a Duro W8031 drill press from an old metal shop and for the past week been cleaning it up. When I got to the drill press table I discovered the column collar was broken and someone attempted to weld it back together, poorly I may add. I'm bummed because it is the original part but I'm not sure where to get a good replacement original or not. I enclosed pictures of it.

So I'm sure this has happen to other members, so where would I go to get a replacement or what are my options here? My intentions is not to restore the drill press to a mint condition to resell. I need a good standing drill press for my woodworking shop. I will create a table, I just need the support and the ability to quickly raise and lower the table on the column.

What would you do?

ME, I would ask our Ag. teacher to braze it back together. I have no idea how much a welder would charge. You could make a useable one out of a block of hardwood and a flycutter. Steel you really need a lathe or a milling machine.
I would measure the column diameter and figure out what other drillpresses use that diameter. If you can not find one you could get a larger diameter one and shim it down.

The above claims 3.5" colunm. not sure if that is your model or not. From checking ebay I believe my walker turner(later delta) 20 dp has a 4" column

Measure column, and see if Grizzly sells a DP with same size column. Might have to wait a couple months for replacement table to arrive

Thanks Bill and Bruce for the information and suggestions.

I don't have all the pieces to braze it back together, it did come with some heavy iron plate that bolts onto the broken collar, not sure how much I would trust the holding power.

I really liked the Popular Mechanics article and the ebay links, that was awesome. It's not exactly my model but close, I did measured the column and it is 3.5in so there are options out there for some kind of replacement like what is on ebay but the shipping cost is crazy expensive. So I may post a WTB and see if I can find one local.

Post your location on your sign in information so it shows.
Be aware that drillpress and drill press can be two separate search terms on some sites. Check search tempest. You may end up buying a cheap DP just to get the table. Some people ask as much for a table as for a complete machine.
I might make a table from 2x4"s sandwiched together like a cutting board with draw bolts leave a small open slit behind the column with a drawbolt very close to front and rear of the column.

Good advice on the spellings for searching..I ran into that before on FB MarketPlace with Bandsaw or Band saw gave me 2 different results back. You may right that I may have to buy a "parts" machine just to get the table.

Yea that ebay listing, not a bad price if they are all working...if you can have them all disconnected and have 4 separate units...as one stop working just move to the next one, easy peasy.. :p

Thanks again for your help, and I added my location to my profile...

With that gang drill I think the idea is the first one drills the pilot hole. Next one drills it to size, the third countersinks the hole, and the forth one does something else. No need to fool with the chuck or worry about losing the chuck key.
