Here's a piece that I just kind of finished up. I built the base as a demo for a class last week teaching Biscuit, Dowel, and Mortise and Tenon Joinery. The base has been dyed black, and then coated with 5 coats of black dyed laquer, followed by ebony paste wax. All of the light maple has been bleached 3 times and is really quite white. The table is Pretty clean, and required a good bit of hand work on the top. The curly maple is 1/8" veneer that was hammer veneered. This is really only a demo piece, but it turned out pretty cool. Sorry for the washed out pictures. Thanks for looking.

Steve,
Great job!. I like the pattern on the top with the nice curly maple. Good design. Will look forward to seeing it in person.

Nice job, as always. I am sure it is not true, but the legs seem to be tapered on the outsides as well. Just the camera angle I would guess.

The legs are only tapered on two faces (the inside). The camera shots are poor, but the overall perception is there. FWIW I did the entire base, minus the bleached beads, in about 2 hours. I was amazed how much more sturdy the dowel joints, and Mortise and tenon joints were than the #20 Biscuits. While I'd always known that biscuits were not strong and not the right way to do joinery of this nature, it was the first time I'd actually done a comparison. Kind of cool.

I'm pretty new to woodworking, and this looks like a good opportunity for me to learn, if you don't mind fielding a couple of questions. What was the comparison you did?

Nice job Steve!
I'm making a similar table right now. It's a little bit of a challenge, you did well.
Thanks for the post.
