The city is replacing Sewer lines behind my business and a track hoe just came through and yanked out Shingle Oak. This is probably a 25 year old tree and the trunk looks really good.

Are Shingle Oaks worth cutting up for boards?

Thanks
Joe

Joe. My experience with shingle oak, is it doesn't make good boards.
The grain comes apart, kind of a shingle effect.
I had a woodmizer LT-30 for ten years, and once sawed some shingle oak for a customer. Within an hour or so, the grain on some of the boards was seperating. He ended up cutting it up for firewood.

That's how it got the name Shingle Oak.....it splits easily. The settlers used it for shingles but probably not for rocking chairs. :)
Makes a nice landscape tree though.
