Attaching endcap (see pics) to workbench - how many lag bolts and where to place?

Any advise here would be appreciated.

Ready to attach my walnut endcap (21x5x1.75 inches, with 19x3x1 inch mortise) to the end of my bench. As you can see, I had to remove a portion of the tenon to create a recess for the vise. Trying to figure out how many lag screws (which will be recessed) should be used to attach the endcap, and where they should be placed. Through the mortise/tenon area, on the periphery, or both?

Wow. That is one solid bench.

No experience with solid wood benches, but since no one else answered.......the only advice I can give is that your walnut end cap is really not much different from a breadboard edge on other projects, so perhaps you should allow for a bit of expansion movement.

Perhaps others will correct me?
