Immediately east of me are many many dairy farms. When there is an east wind, there is a bad smell of manure. Fortunately we only have an east wind about 2 days a year.
BUT, I walk my dog up there and there is no particular odor.
So, an east wind smells, the farms don't. How does that make sense?

The county land fill is 10 miles east of me, and it does smell pretty bad, but I would think that is too far away to matter.

I'm not a dairy farmer, but we live just down the road from one. The only time we smell manure is in the spring when the snow melts and all the manure that the farmer spread all winter long smells a bit for a day or two. The rest of the year other than an occasional Moo you can't even tell it is there, even though the farmer spreads manure every other day. However, some farmers use liquified manure systems for cow waste and they can really stink. Living down wind from pig farms or cattle finishing feed lots can be unpleasant as well.
