View Full Version : Spofford Brace, Replacement Handle?

Recently, I bought what I believe to be an 8" Spofford brace. VERY rusty, perhaps junk, but I paid $1.00 for it. Cleaned it up fairly well. Bit clamp/chuck works well. Crank handle with pewter rings is in good shape. Only problem now is that the butt handle is missing. The butt handle "stub" is a 6 to 8 tpi coarse thread. Does anyone know if there is a replace or repair fix?

Is the thread piece separate from the rest of the crank handle and able to turn on its own?

You may need to make your own top pad and figure out a way to thread it.

You might check with > https://www.georgesbasement.com/galootsales/Sale03042015/SpoffordBraces.htm

There is contact information on the index page.

Jim, thank you for your response and the link.

The coarse-thread nub is fixed. That is, it's part of the crank casting.

On a working/rotating butt handle (aka the cup?) there should be a rotating metal mechanism mounted to the wooden cup that is screwed onto the coarse-thread nub....I think.

I will contact Mr. Langford to see if if might help me come up with a 'fix'.
