And hiding it...the rebate, that is. Rebate to house a plywood back on a case...would rather it not show, so...

Yes, I do pins first. Anyway, red circle shows what is left of the half pin. I use the Pin Board to lay out the tails...
431398
Lay out marks look like this....then a bit of saw work..
431399
Then after a bit of chisel work,,,
431400
And a dry fit...then a look inside?

Later, a 1/4" plywood panel will sit in that rebate...and no square holes sticking out like a sore thumb...

Been working with 1 x 10s, lately.....

Steven, this is the reason for mitred dovetails.

Stephen’s technique is for we mortals.

Stephen’s technique is for we mortals.

It is also what we cabinetmakers do. There are times when we use a mitered joint at the front of a case, but not at the back. In traditional casework we usually use half blind dovetails and have a lap at the back where there is a rabbet all around.

Too much work, for the back of the case....to house a plywood back, so the edges of the plywood won't be seen.

Just something simple, so there won't be a glaring square hole showing.

The other way is to leave the one rebate short ...

... and then complete it once the case is together (otherwise the ends is vulnerable to breaking off) ...

Will be working on a similar way to handle that square hole for Box/Finger Joints. And...drawer fronts, when a through dovetail is called for....
431478
Instead of a square block, with matching grain...may take a few extra cuts....to cover the grooves for the drawer bottom...
