Can I get some opinions on what species this appears to be. Mahogany maybe? It is about a 50 year old built-in.

Mahogany or related, but given the time period, mahogany is a pretty sure bet. Beautiful stuff, too.

Agree with Jim: Surely Mahogany if anywhere around the mid-century, into the 70's. I don't think Sapele was a thing back then.

Why don't you buy one piece and see if it is what you want? That's what I would do.
