I recently made this bowl from Chittamwood. The wood has been air drying for 10 years and really has a lot of character to it.

That's really nice Jack. What is Chittamwood? Looks a lot like some exotic burls but the name sounds domestic. How big is the bowl. It's cool! :)

Thanks John, chittamwood is also known as "smoke tree". It's a small gnarly tree that has smoke like blooms(I think) in the spring. THe bowl is 8" wide and 3" thick. The limbs and roots of this tree are very irregular with crevices and holes in them. The picture doesn't do the wood justice. When you hold it the wood looks different from every angle.

Nice bowl, Jack. I thought "Smoke tree" was the same as Mimosa, but looking at that piece, it doesn't resemble any Mimosa I have ever seen. It also looks like a burl and a pretty one at that.

Yeah, a lot going on in that piece! That's a great piece of wood and a nice bowl you turned out of it.

Next time you post a pic try to make the image bigger so we can enjoy the piece all that much more. And if you need help in figuring out how to do that, just say so.
