A recently completed set of four dovetail chisels. 6" long, widths are 1/4", 5/16", 3/8" and 1/2". Handles are Desert Ironwood. The blades on these are made from NOS Sheffield England tool steel.

Those are so pretty that I'd be reluctant to pound on them. Beautiful!

Beautiful chisels, Ron.
By the way, I just watched the youtube vid on the French Oak Roubo bench build. Are you that Ron Brese? Very impressive build. If so, I’ll bet that was a fun project and looks like a bunch of great craftsmen.

Those do look nice, are the sides beveled and how much if they are?

Beautiful, clean, tight work Ron. Question for Ron or whomever - What is the difference between a dovetail chisel and a bench chisel? What does a dovetail chisel offer in particular to cleaning up dovetails?

The sides are beveled at 20 degrees. Should clear any commonly used DT angle.

Yep Phil, that would be me. I am now 50 lbs. lighter than I was in 2013. Funny coincidence. I watched that FORP video just last night.

David typically a DT chisel has almost no land on the sides so that it doesn't bruised the side walls of the dovetails when chopping the base line. In particular with these chisels is the length. At only 6" long it puts the knifed baseline and the top of the chisel where it's struck with the mallet all in one line of sight.

Those are gorgeous. Probably the nicest set of chisels I've ever seen. I love the proportions. Overall just stunning work Ron!

Thanks Ron. I had caught the short length and knew something was different about the lands, but did not why. Again, very nice craftsmanship.

Umm, wow! Not sure what else to say about how they look. I assume that they work as well as they look.

Ron,

Stunning.

I was ogling these for some time before I realized that they were yours. I should have known right away - they have your "no excuses" style about them. I bet the ironwood handles go a long way toward balancing/taming the heavy steel. I wish I was a few hours closer so I could get a hold of one. It makes me want to padlock the drawer housing my motley collection of chisels (cast-offs, has-beens, and home-brews so no one looks at them).

I hope you and Julie are doing good in this crazy time and you have your family close at hand. Give her my best regards, please.

I’m concerned you’ve not received enough praise for these. Exceptional work! The first statement was borderline sarcasm. The second wasn’t. Really nice stuff Ron.

Nice chisels. With Desert Ironwood being a protected species how does one get it?

From what I've read permits are issued for harvesting this material. I couldn't find any info as to who qualifies for a harvesting permit.
