I made this “bench slave” a few years back. It works very well and is a simple build. I built it as a kind of prototype but it’s been working for years so no need to improve. I’ve thought about improvements and will include if I ever need to build a new one.

Thanks for sharing this bench slave design! Very helpful to see what you've done and get your recommendation on how well it's worked.

That's pretty neat. Thanks for sharing it.

What a coincidence. I needed one yesterday for planing a 22" x 34" door edge. I do want to make one, but I didn't want to delay the planing operation. So I rigged this one up:

430549

Why in the world does the photo come in sideways?

Anyway, I wanted my vertical part to be as thick as the vise jaw, about 1-1/2", so I just clamped 2 plywood pieces together, and then clamped the "foot" a little way down. To hold it securely to the bench I used the trusty hand screw and holdfasted it down. A bit elaborate, I guess. It grew in the making.

My bench slave is hopefully doing her homework but great post James, thanks for this.

My bench slaves emancipated themselves by sweeping tools off the bench, straight into the bin.

Lon Scheinling suggests a name for this work holder a bit more harmonious with the 21st century. He calls it a board jack.

So Bob, don't you see how offensive that term is to females who might desire to hold boards? Perhaps Board Elevator might be more harmonious for the 21st century. :-)
