I started out with a Holdfast venturi pump that I have for my lathe vacuum system. It works great, but the drawback was having to have a large air compressor, which I have, but it runs quite a bit. Since then, I have bought one of the cheaper Robinair 15310 pumps. It works fine, but I did cobble together a filter for it to eliminate the oil mist that happens while it is running.

There are plenty of used Gast rotary vane pumps to be found on Ebay <$150.

I'm happy with my JB Eliminator (4 cfm--runs two chambers easily). Gasts are really nice--and i'd not hesitate to buy a used one. If i recall correctly--Robinair makes 2 lines, one that can be serviced and the other is not rebuildable--but it's been a year or more since i was looking so that may not be reality.

I have a 1/4hp Gast that I scored for free from a lab instrument that was being discarded. I have only stabilized pen blanks, but it works well and mine pulls a little over 27" Hg. It has many hours on it and runs fine.
