I am building a hall tree the center section will have a seat that lifts for storage.it will be oak 3/4 thick 18 x 30. Is there a hinge that will be soft close so it won’t slam shut.i have used lid supports before but I was wondering if there is a hinge ?

I have used different versions of these on hope chests and very happy with them, use the calculator to figure out which ones you need to use.

Wouldn't ordinary soft-close European-style cabinet hinges work - or do you need a hinge that will hold the lid up?

If you use an ordinary hinge, the bench cannot fit right against the wall. If you do, the top collides with the wall when you open it. To deal with this, there's a kind of hinge generally called a bench hinge. It allows the bench to butt up to the wall, but still open. Here's an example, but they come in various sizes and lift strength. https://www.amazon.com/Bench-Seat-Hinge-Light-Weight/dp/B01CV179HM

A continuous hinge along with a Sugatsune soft close support worked well on a window seat / toy box. As noted by Ron, use the calculator.
