View Full Version : Need a new til for the planes

Ever since the Tool Cabinet has been finished...the planes are feeling neglected....
429659
The old Hammer Til has been removed, today. Unable to salvaged it, is out by the fire pit. Thinking about a "Bookcase" with doors....maybe with plexiglass "lights" in the doors? Maybe a few drawers, to hold the block plane crowd in check? Instead of standing these up, maybe sit them down on a series of shelves. Planes could sit on that foam drawer protector stuff you can buy for toolbox drawers?

Bought a bit of lumber, today....some 1 x 10 x 6's and a couple 1 x 4 x 6' planks....1 x 4s will get ripped down for stiles and rails for a pair of doors...Will wait and see what hinges will look/work the best. Will be a shelf of sorts, for the drawers to slide in on....then the first of several "main" shelves....to sit a few planes on....starting with the longest/heaviest on the first shelf....then work my way up.

need to sit this up, where the doors from it and the tool cabinet will get along...I can move the plane til back quite a bit, if need be. There is over 2' of space, front to back. have to allow for that swing. :D

"demo" of the old plane til starts tomorrow...will need a parking space for the planes to sit in...as the bench may be very busy....thinking dovetails at the corners? Shelves using sliding dovetails?

Stay tuned..the cussing has only just begun :D

Steven,

From your experience, my own, and others posting here, it looks like a person is never really "completely done" with shop organization, storage.

One question: are you going to be able to salvage and reuse some of the lumber in your existing til set up? Salvaging lumber is something I do a lot of, which is why I have a lot of "Semi OK" lumber around that l haven't used. Throwing stuff away is not my strong point.

Regards,

Stew

We'll see what I can do.....Hammer till was de-laminating...and was glued as well as screwed together. Would be nice IF I could reuse the plywood of the plane til....for the back of the new one....have to see what else I can scrounge....so far, a bunch of screws....will see what I can do for drawer parts...may even have some for dividers in the drawers.

Will find out tomorrow....as soon as a parking spot for all them planes can be found....

Ok...Moose & Squirrel delivered The Plan...
429725
And the old til has been moved out of the way...
429726
Planes have been stashed out of "harm's way"....not sure I'd trust this group, though..
429727
Liable to come back later, and find 21 of them sitting there....bad as Mice...

Goal was to allow the right hand door of the Tool Cabinet to swing fully opened...
429728
I used a sharpie to mark where the door swings through at...so I know where the left hand edge of the Plane Til will be..
429729
I don't need the plane til right out near the edge....it can sit back a bit. Will need to sit up on 1" thick "feet" pads....to clear the top of the bench.

Wonder IF I'll need to "pull a Permit" for this?
Stay tuned :D

( Idea: Rotate the old til, split it down the middle, hinge the "halves" to the sides of the Saw Til...Add a plywood "cover" to the top....dust seal. We'll see..)

steven c newman
04-07-2020, 5:15 PM
Hmmm...ok...I also wanted to find out how far I could reach to the right.....and made a mark there..
429739
So...about 30" wide. Will need to set this up on 1" thick foot pads, so I have clearance over the top of the bench....

Thinking through dovetails at the corners...and sliding dovetails to hold the shelves.....3 drawers along the bottom, means two dividers between them.

Will get the case built first....then start on the 2 doors. And, 3 drawers. May drill a few access holes in the bottom shelf...so I can drive a few screws into the foot pads....have a lot of weight coming in...need this so it will not tip over. Holes would be just big enough for the driver to drive the screws.

429740
Now, about this thing...assembled with lots of glue back in the day. Thinking I could split this down the middle, rotate it 180 degrees, and hinge this to the saw til...add a panel across the top as a dust cover...and add a latch. May have to hang the longer mitre saws elsewhere....and saw the saw til for regular handsaws? That way, they will stay dust free....

stay tuned....not much else going on in my shop....

hauled a few things to the shop after Lunch....
429795
2 planks...will be enough for the top, bottom and both sides,,,and a tad left over..
429796
A pair of D8 crosscut saws...Panel saw is a 10ppi, full length is an 11 ppi...gave both a work out...
429797
Learning to work out of the Tool Cabinet,,,some things will stay out, for now..
429798
Decided to at least try "Tails" first....not a big fan, though..
429799
A few things missing? Laid out the tails...
429800

Then saw the tails...
429801
then chop the tails..
429803
Stay tuned..

steven c newman
04-08-2020, 6:02 PM
finally...tails were done..
429804
Then use these to lay out the pins...
429805
More handsaw work..trying to leave the lines, and cut on the waste side of them...
429806
Broom Handle was taking too long...too many teeth...No. 4 only needed about 8 full length strokes. Then the chopping again..
429807
Chop down 1/2 way from this face...then flip things over, and finish up..
429808
Now, the main reason I leave the lines....I can trim up to them, as I fit the joint together,,,
429809
Couple lines were sawn away...loose fit. meh...guess this will be the hidden corner..
429810
Busy day, making sawdust..til the cramps started up..
429811
Next 3 corners will be done Pins first...I get better results that way.

Head count for shelves....came up one board short  So, when I go to get that plywood for the back...I'll pick up one more board.
Closed up the doors to the Cabinet, and called it a day....Uncle Charles in still in the house...and my legs...

Stay tuned..

steven c newman
04-09-2020, 11:27 AM
Hmmm...well, too late now...What was labeled as 1 x 10s in the racks....turned out to be 1 x 8s....Picked up an actual 1 x 10 today....not a biggie...can rip the "wide" board down to match the others. Might even get rid of a bad edge?

Only 1/4" x 4' x 4' plywood available....was pine. had it cut down to 30" x 4', to fit in my van.

Not starting out too well....rained all the way to Lowes, and back....get everything into the house..rain stops....Trying to tell me something?

Will continue on with the 1 x 8s....and try some more dovetails...after Lunch has settled....wish me luck...

steven c newman
04-09-2020, 6:18 PM
Somehow, when doing Pins first...things seem to go quicker....
429892
Ready to work on some shelves...Got 3 corners done, today...
429893
2 dry fits..
429894
3rd corner dry fit..
429895
And the last corner dry fitted. Was a chippy kind of day..
429896
Some of these even bounced off of me....

Will see how tomorrow goes....may have a few shelves ready...
Stay tuned :D

Getting ready for a glue-up..after Supper....cussing levels will require ear plugs....almost to the level of the first 10 minutes of "Full Metal Jacket" .....

Sliding dovetails have been milled....Shelves cut to length and pins milled on the ends. Dividers between the 3 drawers have been milled, and ready to go.
429959
Once the bottom of the case is driven down home into the corner joint, the dividers will slide right in...Grain direction has been maintained throughout...so I can apply glue to all the parts.
429960
At least, these lined up....looks like a row of bow ties....
Too many joints to glue, too many clamps to use....not enough hands....it might get ugly in the shop, later...:o

Stay tuned...:D

steven c newman
04-10-2020, 9:07 PM
Well, it be in the clamps..
430009
A LOT of clamps...
430010
I think the clamps might weigh more than the case does?
Think I'll go work on a different "case" ....
430015
I'm whopped...

steven c newman
04-11-2020, 8:51 AM
More fun today....removing that forest of clamps, and installing a plywood back....while squaring up the case.

Doors: Do I cover the drawers, or stop the doors just above them....? Hinges? Latch?

Drawers: Inset, or...overlay...? Handles?

Install foot pads....to the case, then down in place....drawers will be in the way....may extend the pads a bit...front and back.

Plexiglass: rebates or grooves?

steven c newman
04-11-2020, 1:51 PM
Clamps came off, nothing blew up...reinforced the joints for the shelves with a couple screws on each end...set it aside.
430060
While I brought the plywood down to the shop...and sliced of a bit...
430061
Yes, I wore those goggles, saw was kicking a lot of junk up into my face. Then, made a square corner..
430062
Then used a LONG pipe clamp to pull the case into square..
430063
More glue and screws. then attach those foot pads to the bottom of the case...then the case was set where it belonged....making sure the door from the Tool Cabinet will swing by..
then just load it up...
430064
Still need 3 drawers built...and either one or two doors made. I even found a Centerpiece for the top of the case...
430065
22" long woodie....Auburn Tool Co., Auburn NY. #81...I think.

That will be enough for one day...still sore from yesterday....may work on drawers next.
Stay tuned....and have a safe Easter weekend, you all.

steven c newman
04-11-2020, 7:29 PM
Rumour Control says there IS a tablesaw located in the shop....somewhere..
430084
Seems I need it, to rip most of those cut-offs down for drawer/door parts....
430085
Ah....knew it was still down here....set things up to do some ripping...
430086
Not only does that fence guide my router, and my circular saw.....also a pretty good fence for the tablesaw....
needed 12 parts, for 3 drawers...
430087
That I can then cross cut into sides and drawer fronts...and still have enough for the backs of the drawers...
430089
Thinking 3/4" thick for the sides of these drawers MIGHT be a bit too thick? Maybe resaw the sides and backs down a bit...1/2" or 5/8" thick....and leave the fronts at 3/4".....too late in the day...leave that for another day...

Stay tuned...

Hmmm..wondering....one door, or two doors? Will use a piano hinge, either way. have priced the Plexiglass panel....at Blue BORG. $20 for a sheet the size of the front of the til, would have to trim to fit..

steven c newman
04-11-2020, 8:15 PM
THOUGHT I was done in the shop for today....went down to look at Mallets....wound up resawing Pine..
430094
Blade all the way up. fence is as close as I can safely saw a thin board....I think it is just over 1/2" between the fence and the blade. Made a long of thin scraps.
430095
But..drawer backs and sides are now a bit thinner...
430096

Should work ok for the drawers...left the fronts at 3/4" thick.

NOW...I am done for the day..

Good news that Moose and Squirrel were able to deliver The Plan! Word out on the street is that Boris and Natasha were looking to intercept them and take The Plan!

Complete story in tomorrow's edition of the Frostbite Falls Daily.

04-12-2020, 7:20 PM
Maybe get the news from the Whatsamatta U. Student Newspaper?

Anyway...
430168
Spent the day milling parts for the drawers...Edges planed so the sides and front fit. Grooves and dados made....Worked on dovetails for a bit..
430169
Used the Stanley 71-1/2 to clean the bottom of the dados...
430170
And some 1/4" wide grooves..
430171
Managed to get one drawer in the clamps, and glued up...by 5pm quitting time..
430172
One done, two to go...need to find the rest of them door handles....
430173
Gonna need a few...before too much longer...
Will need to make some trim pieces, to cover where the doors won't.

steven c newman
04-13-2020, 1:15 PM
Went to the Blue Borg this morning....5 handles, and a sheet of plexiglass....the the Drive-thru over at Burger King to pick up Lunch....waiting on that to settle, then try the shop for a bit..

Stay (burp) Tuned....Film @2300hrs...I hope...

steven c newman
04-13-2020, 6:59 PM
Drawer No. 1.....cleaned up, handle installed..
430259
Set it in it's new home, for now....while I work on drawer No. 2
430260
Which was soon all clamped up...
430261
Would have liked to start on Drawer No. 3...but...
430262
Will have to wait on the glue to dry...again. 2 hours of shop time, on a MONDAY? better not press my luck...

Stay Tuned...tomorrow is another day...

steven c newman
04-14-2020, 9:57 AM
Have an appointment this morning....blood thinner clinic....then we'll see about hiding out in the shop...

May do a molding around the drawers, since the doors won't cover them up.

Stay tuned...will see what sort of trouble I can get into, today...

steven c newman
04-14-2020, 3:55 PM
Finger Poke Reading...1.9, Not too bad. Got to the shop about ...1200 hrs.....was done just after 1430Hrs....Drawer #2 came out of the clamps..
430350
Drawer front planed smooth..
430351
So where the sides. Got out a handle to install....needed ground round..the "Before"
430352
Yeah, I don't like them, either...so...the After..
430353
To install the handle...needed to center it up on the drawer's front...
430354
Then that North Brothers No. 41 to make a couple pilot holes for the screws. Once installed, it can sit out of the way with Drawer #1..
430356
2 done, one to go...Have to keep an eye out....
430357
Block planes are checking things out, as other planes take their spots from them...
430358
Ohio No. 035 is in the til...

Part 2 of today's follies? Coming right up....Mother Nature takes precedence....
BRB, stay tuned..

steven c newman
04-14-2020, 4:18 PM
Ok, Drawer #2 done...might as well get#3 into the clamps...
430362
Clean up the grooves and dados..
430363
Pins laid out on one end of the drawer front, do a bit of handsaw work, then..
430364
Some work with a mallet and chisel...halfway from one side, flip over finish the chopping...small rasp to clean up...use the pins to lay out the tails...bandsaw to make a bunch of cuts..
430365
Along with the last chisel, I used this fancy one to get into the corners..same as before, chop in halfway, flip over, and finish the chopping..
430366
Then a test fit...
430367
Has a notch where the bottom's groove comes through..no biggie...end grain plug like the other 2 drawers...Then the clamps, cauls, and glue....after getting the plywood bottom to fit..
430368
Sweep the floor, call it a day...

will start laying things out for two doors, later...need 4 stiles and 4 rails, to start with....M&T at the corners...run a groove to house the plexiglass "windows" and buy some hinges and a latch...there's always tomorrow, eh?
Stay tuned....another week, and a finish?

steven c newman
04-14-2020, 11:41 PM
Hmmm, when I close up shop for the day, sometimes it is hard to just leave it closed..
Sitting around, doing nothing but thinking, dangerous, I know.....decided to at least add the "molding" around the drawer openings..
430411
Nothing real fancy, but I needed to rip some stock for it..
430412
Ripped from some 1 xs scrap...because I also decided to rip stiles...
430413
And of course some rails to match..
430414
After a quick trip upstairs to make sure the groove will fit over the plexiglass panel...

So..tomorrow will be getting the last drawer done, then a LOT of figuring, measuring, sketching....to find out how 8 pieces of pine will turn into a pair of doors..
430415
Like how much of a tenon to make on the ends of the rails...
430416
And how the two doors will meet up in the middle....maybe some sort of lap joint along the meeting edges? Will see how well that Wallmart Mallet works doing mortises...?
Stay tuned....

steven c newman
04-15-2020, 11:21 AM
Payday! Bills to pay, errands to run. May get to the shop later? We'll see what happens....no rush, right?

steven c newman
04-15-2020, 4:07 PM
Drawer #3 is fitted..
430455
And parts for the left hand door have been dry-fitted...
430458
1/2 lap where the doors will meet has been milled, and checked with a piece of scrap set-up block..
430459
Mortise and tenons?
430460
Used the Mortise Jig..
430461
Where I can clamp a stile in place, lay out the mortise, move the part back a bit, and chop the mortise...
430462
Tenons are 1/4"....groove for the plexi isn't quite that wide...

Hinges, a latch, and a tool to cut the plexiglass was picked up today...along with a shoplight for above the drill press/sander area...then forgot a light bulb..
Going to be one of THEM days...stay tuned...

steven c newman
04-15-2020, 8:35 PM
Had issues with cutting the plexiglass panel....was enough good left, I could made one panel for the lefthand door..and got it glued up...
430475
With cauls to keep the corners flat. Panel issues?
430476
Despite 5 passes with the cutter....and snapping on a edge (tablesaw...block of wood on top of the plexi...) it snapped wrong...will need to a pre-cut panel for the right hand door...as soon as I find out what size...
Latch?
430477
Handles will be black, might as well have this black as well.

Let the glue up sit overnight....may go ahead and hinge it, and install the door....should be a world of fun...
Stay tuned...

James Pallas
04-16-2020, 1:22 PM
Well done Steven. Straight forward soundly built. Will last a long time.

steven c newman
04-16-2020, 3:17 PM
Right hand door is now in the clamps...waiting on glue to dry..
430507
Left hand door had it's rebate cleaned up..
430508
Then hinged and a handle..
430509
and the "swing" checked...
430510
Just waiting on glue to dry....I did check the door for square, during the glue up..
430511
Seems to be square...
Fun part will be tomorrow, when I go to hang this door....may have to move the bench a bit....to get my fat body in place..
Stay tuned...

steven c newman
04-17-2020, 5:02 PM
Methinks I be done....
430627
Open the doors to let it air out a bit...
430628
Handle details
430629
Magnetic catch on the inside for the right hand door...

Letting the Witch's Brew dry for a while...and see where I missed...

Nice job, and I think you are going to enjoy using it! It looks like it will be quick and handy storage for planes.

Than you Steven, nice addition to your shop.

I often thought it would be nice to have doors on my plane shelf, but I don’t think it would work in my situation. My shop is so small, each time I am done with a #6/7/8 it has to be back on it’s parking spot, and opening two doors every 2mn would not work.

Maybe I could organise better but having more than 2 long planes on the bench at the same time is already too much clutter with the rest. As I have no other temporary parking, open shelves just above the bench allow me to quickly place back a plane out of the way.

It was nice of you to document the build.

This is the area I have to work in..
430798
Not a whole of room...then open the four doors...
430799
So, basically, I'll get out what tools i'd need for the tasks....and close things back up....unless I figure out which tool I missed. Tools in use get set into the tool well, until needed.

Sometimes, they are put back at the end of the day, sometimes not...depends on what is being done...

Next up? A better "box" for these things...
430800
As they are getting mighty dusty sitting like that...
Picked up a couple 1 x10 x 6' Pine planks....may need one more....but, that's a tale for another post..
Stay tuned...
