While I was cleanin' up shop today I chucked up a piece of Hackberry that was rescued from the wood pile. Gave the boy some quick instruction with a roughing gouge and turned him loose. This is what he ended up with. I think he did pretty good, but I'm a little biased...:D

Derek is his name and he's 15. He's a shaving off the ol' block...;)

Great job Mark but watch out. You will be getting a second lathe pretty soon if he keeps that up. ;)

I like the flowing lines of the piece and the use of the wood grain to accentuate the flow. Great job! Keep up the turning.

I think it stinks!

That I didn't know what a lathe was when I was 15 - that is.

Well done Derek! And Merry Christmas.

I think the greatest thing is you teaching your son the basics and letting him have a go at it. He will remember those times forever and the candle stick turned out awesome!!

Nicely done, Derek! Keep practicing and in no time you will be hogging time on Dad's lathe.

And Daddy Cothren, there is no better time spent than time spent like this with you son. Way to go!!!!:D
