I'm still working on the walnut cabinet. I picked and order (several) brass hinges for it some time ago. Now I found these neat pewter knobs with a pattern cast in. They really don't look great together. I thought about painting the knobs black, but I don't think that would help the mismatch. What about painting the hinges with something like Rustoleum silver? Or I could strip the laquer off the hinges and blacken them with Brass Black. I've never seen pewter colored hinges.

What thinkest thou?

It sounds like you're really intent on using these pewter knobs. And I think I would be too, I really like the look of pewter.

Two options that I would explore.

1. take the knobs to the hardware store, Big box, lumber yard, etc. wherever they supply hinges in your area and compare them to some brushed stainless steel hinges. Might be a close enough match to suit you. The color should be close but the hinges will have a lacquer coating that will make them shiny. You might be able to remove that and give them a duller finish. If they are inset doors, then maybe a no mortise brushed SS hinge would leave so little hinge showing that it wouldn't be noticeable.

2. consider hidden hinges, eg. Euros.

Thanks John,

I guess I haven't even seen brushed stainless. They would be pretty close and the doors are inset. I'll have to look around. I really want to go with butt hinges on this one. I suspect brushed stainless would be great.

David, in case you may not have noticed before, but "Google" rules! Do a search for "pewter hinges" (sans quotes) and you'll find that there are actually a number of sources. Hope this helps...

(Ick...It's raining again! That's 8 days in a row now!)

David,

Would my favorite full wrap inset hinges work for this application??? They come in brushed and in wroght iron. Would either of these match the pewter??

John M. you keep the rain up there! We've had enough for a while. I'll check Google. I just checked Lee Valley and did not find a thing. I was surprised.

Terry, there you go again peddling those "full wrap" hinges! Dogone it! This was suppose to be a "throw together, quicky job", remember? I guess I can't do one of "those". I just created a guide for my FMT to inlet butt hinges. In tests, it works great and fast and slick! Takes me about 2 minutes to do one after marking one edge. Geeze! I wanna test it for real! ;)

Terry, David, These full wrap hinges are what I was referring to as "no mortise".

Brushed nickle? hmmmm.... maybe?

David, if you go with the full wrap hinges, you wont need your FMT guide.

David,
Don't know if this will help or not, but there is an article in the March issue of "WOOD" magazine that tells how to darken brass hardware.
Good luck, Doug

John, you *did* say "no mortise" hinges. Sorry I missed that. I *want* to use my FMT guide (that I just spent waaaay too many hours building). :D I really need to try the Euros and the full wrap hinges. I just haven't done a project they seem quite right for yet.

Doug, I'll see if I've got that issue. I use Birchwood Casey's Brass Black in the shop to blacken brass. It does a pretty good job and is quick though not deep.

I'm also using brass shelf pin supports, so unless the brass blackening is pretty slick, I may scrap the knob idea. I am acquiring a collection of those "scrapped ideas". At least the pins don't seem to be lacquered.
I assume that lacquer thinner will strip the hinges. If it is some other coating, it may be a new ball game.

Hey Grouchy! I noticed you sent me straight to "pulls". Coincidental maybe, but I think with brass shelf pins and brass hinges, it makes more sense to go brass pulls. And really to my eye, brass kind of "goes" with walnut. ...just such a neat knob with canoe on the lake in the timber... ;)

Thanks everyone!

David

You missed these, on the second page, they would really set it off.

Yeah, and they are all pewter colored! They are neat though. I'll look at the others here in a bit.

Thanks Bobby.

Bobby, which site had the "fishing collection" knobs? I can't bring them up with a search on any of the listed sites.

When I last loaded the site I lost patience before I let page 2 load. Got there! Do you deal with MyKnobs? I read the terms and they are not "easy" on returns, but I can understand that. There are some beauties there! ...with prices to match... But you get what you pay for as a rule. What a selection of colors! What will match or go with polished brass hinges and pins?

I saved the site.

Thanks!

David
