I saw a post about Birdseye pine? There was some discussion about its rarity or even if it existed? In any event I was in a local big box store and saw this in one of their racks. Don't really know what it is but looks like Birdseye? IDK, what's your opinion? Though it was cool but didn't buy it. There was one other a few boards behind. 426632426633

You run across different grain s in pine from time to time. I was looking at some pine to make a cabinet for my son and his wife and found several boards of curly pine at a big box store. I used it to make the door panels on this pantry cabinet.

Michael, The bird's eye pine came up in a few threads: What do you guys look for in wood? was one of them:

Depending on my plans and budget, the board in your picture might have come home with me. Usually the more bird's eyes the more tempting.

If I see an interesting board, it comes home with me. My storage area is full of interesting boards.

I've seen some shop cabinets with beautiful birdseye pine panels in the doors...the material was found at a box store and the worker grabbed it before anyone else saw it was there. You never know what "lurks" in those bins. I don't generally buy lumber for woodworking at the 'borg but I often take a peek at what's in the racks when I'm walking through because of occasional treasures to be found.

You see it occasionally, sometimes the "brighter" ones like in Michael's post and sometimes the darker, swirlier ones on Jim's and sometimes a dark more dot like one. It seems to me they are more prevalent in spruce, but you do see them in pines as well. A cabin I used to stay in up in northern Minnesota used to have a whole kitchen in done in a birdseye pine, that was probably milled from trees on site in the 1940s. It was quite striking.

You know why you can't find any quartersawn red oak in those wee 1/4" and 1/2 " thick sizes at the BORG? Guys like me look for them every time we walk by that rack. I will have to start watching for birdseye pine, that is pretty.
