Finally got the fence back from the grinding shop, fixed the milled flats and repainted it. Got 99% of it wrapped up, need a spring for the guard return. Helixhead, bearings, surface grinding, stripped, filled, parts made, etc.

Need some toy mustangs for that aircraft carrier! Nicely restored piece of old iron. Great to see things being used, and not discarded.

These old machines are so "elegant" in their design. Beautiful restoration there, Darcy!

Was that a client request? I thought you were generally against them on jointers.

Looks good by the way

Yes it was. I do prefer straight knives, but I will do whatever someone is paying for.

Which is why he is getting a shop full of vintage machinery. Not only do the function flawlessly for 70+ years, they have a style that will always look beautiful.

Darcy did you have the tables ground? Were they originally planed? How flat did you get them?

looks like a late thirties, early forties vintage? Old jointers are a bargain, even when someone pops for the Hermance head. Dave

I had them surface ground. Yes they were planed originally, the grinding was purely for cosmetic reasons.

I have not checked flatness yet, but they better be pretty good or I'll be pissed. Lol

That's a fine one. Love using the "ships wheel" jointers. Spin them down. Kinda' spin them up! Take off as much as an
inch in one pass.

At least your using those nerd blocks lol....

Personally those things scare the heck out of me. I trust being able to feel with my bare hands something slipping than with those dam plastic mitt things.

Your so irresponsible Darcy just so so irresponsible.. wearing that hoody like some kinda punk.

You see the 20” American right around the corner from me. I kinda want it but I already have two jointers one bing the king of modern jointers the Martin. And I’m kinda cash poor at the moment so there is also that little factoid.

But man I want it. I love the original paint decals and badges just the way it is. Wish I was wealthy so I could just hoard this crap and maybe make a museum. I think he may be asking way to much for it also but I really don’t know.

Patrick, you'd probably need to either raise the ceiling or lower the floor to fit one of those bad girls in your shop. :) In full disclosure...I probably would have to do that, too.

Your talking bandsaw I think.

I’m talking jointer.

I’m bringing my 20”Martin home come this spring summer fall.

Meet wants it sooooo bad!

If I was even the slightest wealthy Jim I’d surely just move and or buy a building for this little working museum.

I may be cheap, but that seems really high for a 20" babbet jointer of unknown condition. Well that and there is a 20" oliver not that far away from there for about 1/3 the price

I may be cheap, but that seems rather high for a 20" babbet jointer of unknown condition.

With a head that should go in a scrap pile.

I paid 700 for my 30" American, drove 7 hours to get it, had new gibs made, repoured bearings, it was worth it.

I really like the gripper push blocks. They have nice drop down hooks on them. I try to always use them facing material.

I'd drive that far for a 30" american. probably be willing to pay 2x that price as well..lol

Patrick Walsh

I kinda figured this much.

But you know I’d rather pay that $5k then do all that work and then have a real machine vrs what 10k will get you for a new machine.

But that’s me I’m loco homie...

I was pretty sure $5k was what should cost after The head replaced and bearings sorted, tables ground and plugged in. But again I have no idea as I only have one a few old machines at this point. I’m pretty sure I got no deals as I just wanted what I wanted.

You better pay 500 after all that work.

Good grinding isn't cheap, cheap grinding isn't good.

Have close to 4 in a head.

I love my Babbitt bearing 30" jointer, super smooth and quiet, but I wouldn't put a 6k head in it.

Patrick Walsh

I thought that place Peter used up in Michigan to fix the Rhode Island mess was pretty inexpensive all said and done. Of course I didn’t talk to him but I heard some number per sqft that was way lower than I would had ever expected. Low enough I’d never hesitate if I had the need knowing someplace good to go that could 100% get me what I expected.

As for heads I have no idea. Depending on the condition of the tables on the new t23 I’m half considering making the drive.

But yeah I wouldn’t spend $6k for a head in a old machine like that. Or would I lol. Hard to say with me just never know what I’ll get my sights set on lol..

Should be about 1k to grind tables and fence. The fence and outfeed table ledge are the hard parts.
