Can any Felder folks verify whether a Felder AD 951 can be purchased with a 7.5 hp motor, and what the upcharge for that is?
I am told it is only available in UK, but it's in the catalog. It was also on the website, but the site was just overhauled and that level of detail is no longer given there. The default motor is 5hp. Then they jump to 10hp, I was told. Is that correct. I would think 5 is a bit underpowered for a machine that size.

Thank you.

(I signed up for the Felder group forum, but I'm not able to post questions there for reasons I've yet to figure out.)

I can't verify what is available in US but generally Felder uses the same metric frame motor in their 5,7.5, and 10 machines. Probably a 100L but I doubt there is much if any price difference between a 7.5 or 10 so if the 7.5 isn't available and you have the amps to handle the 10 ( about 22 @ 240 three phase ), I'd get that. I would prefer either a larger frame motor or the 7.5 but that hp wasn't available years ago when I bought my shaper either. Dave

-5.5hp
-10.5hp
-13.5hp

To me, odd that they offer 5.5hp but I guess it is what it is. BTW, it's most commonly the 10.5hp we sell here in the states. I don't have my quoting system up but it's probably only a few hundred $$$ price difference. Three-phase motors are always less expensive than 1-phase. Hope this helps,

Erik

I think the 5.5 hp comes from a 4 kw motor. Sometimes the hp looks add because the Euro motor was originally spec'd at 50 hz. Speeding the motor to 60 hz adds 20% to the hp.

If run at the same voltage, the available torque at 60 Hz is divided by the same ratio, so the available output power remains the same.

However, if the voltage is also multiplied by the same ratio, then the current & torque will remain unchanged at 60Hz, and the power will be multiplied by the same ratio (120%).

Depends on how the motor is wound too. SCM motors in Europe are spec'd at 7.5 hp but are rated at 9 hp here. The windings in the stator may be different or the motors are rated at 208 and then stepped up to 240 . Dave

Thank you. Yes, the upcharge turned out to be less than I thought for the 10hp: $484.

I'm also looking at a KF 700, which as standard is also equipped with 5.5hp.
Any advice on best motor sizes with that machine?
Maybe it's good to bump up to 7.5 or 10?

The shaper will benefit more than the saw with the higher hp. I've had the 10 hp for 20 years on my F7 and while the shaper isn't built heavy enough for 10 hp it is overbuilt for 5. If you don't plan on heavy shaping, 5.5 is fine. Dave
