can I keep it?
423536
May need a bit of work..
423537
and a few parts replaced..
423538
When last seen, this was screwed to an Oak plank, and hung up on a wall, like a coat hook....and called a "Dowel Cutter"

Counting sales tax....$34.86....and a 3 block walk back home.

Stanley No. 71-1/2. (nickel plate is 90%....gone)

Stay tuned:D

Depending on your available equipment, left hand twist drills often work better than an easy-out for me when trying to remove a broken screw. Some better stocked hardware stores carry a selection of left hand bits.

The motors on many older drill presses may have a couple of quick connects in the electrical connection area. These can be connected with a jumper, WITH POWER DISCONNECTED, to reverse the motor rotation. My newer drill press doesn't have this. That is why my old drill press is still in the shop. Washing machine and dryer motors often have this ability. My old drill press may actually have a washing machine motor as a replacement.

Let's see....handles replaced..
423539
Check. Broken bolt removed...
423540
And a start on sharpening that old cutter....
423541
Sole is looking better....
Needed to retap a hole..
423542
To 1/4" x 20....have bought a new thumbscrew...1/4" x 20 x 3/4"long....need to grind a point on the end...
423543
Stanley Logo...in script form. So far, less than $60 spent, counting the depth adjuster wheel.

Will keep an eye peeled, for more cutters....when funds allow....present cutter measures 0.475" in width.

90% of the Nickel plating is..gone....may leave things as is...

Might be a keeper...

So far...$$ spent....$34.86 for the plane, $20 on a depth adjuster wheel, $0.90 for two thumbscrews.

Next big check is in April.....may see about new/used cutters then. I can use what I have right now, to clean up dados for the backs of drawers, and such items that need the bottoms leveled out.

Don't have a way to re-plate things....maybe use a spritz of oil, then wipe down....sole is going to be waxed up, anyway...

Will set this aside for a few days...adjuster is supposed to get here this coming Thursday...need the bench cleared off, to do that Sellers Project Build....

Will update as I can....

I'd love to be able walk 3 blocks from my home and find stuff like this! Nice!!

Me too, a 3 block walk only gets me to my mailbox and back.

423600

The circle at the bottom is where the mailbox is. The arrow is pointing to the house. The greenhouse, below the house in the picture, is 48'X20' for a sense of scale.

At least going to get the mail is usually a pleasant walk for a little exercise.

Let's see...sharpened the 1/2" cutter...and shaped the thumbscrew...PIP?
423659
Cutter, and..
423660
Test drive? Poplar board, laid out a shallow dado....
423661
Knifed the lines ( later used a back saw..)
423662
Nice, flat dado...
423663
This just might come in handy....working on making a couple cutters...
423664
This one is about 1/2 way done....trying for a 3/8" cutter...

Will be waiting at the Mailbox, Thursday....and then try the depth adjuster that evening...I hope.

All done...
423793
423794
About ready to go to work..
423795
Sole has been waxed up...total cost for this plane ? Just about $55.....counting tax.

Steven,

Good job, putting the result of a rust hunt back into shape to use!

Excellent work, Steve...Good job of restoring AND a good low investment to buy it!!!

Well, decided to add a cutter to the set...found an allen wrench close to the 3/8" width I wanted.
424361
Got some work done, but needed a better grinding wheel.....and a cup of water to dunk the cutter to be in...
424362
So, today, I cut the end down to length...to match the old cutter. Rounded the end to match. Then the Dremel with both a cutting disc, and a grinding wheel that was the same width as the notch...grind, dunk, grind, dunk....
424363
Edge has been sharpened up, even did a small test drive....look right above the left knob. I measure the width of the cutter at 0.380"....I think that will be close enough to 3/8"...

Now then..my Stanley 45 has its own wooden box....and these three as well..
424364
And the lid can even shut!
424365
So, since I do have a bit of Ash left over..
424366
Why not a wooden case to store the #71-1/2 in? Not sure I have enough lumber to build one for that other router sitting there..

Might give me something to do, over the weekend? Seems I am getting fairly good and making a box...

steven c newman
01-24-2020, 11:32 AM
Well, in looking for an idea of a box to store this "Expensive" plane...came across this image...
424409
One, it would be out of the Ash I have on hand..NOT the plywood. Two, corners would be either finger jointed or dovetailed, not sure which, yet.

Might be a weekend, or two  to build? May even do a story about the build, IF anyone wants to read it?

Stay tuned...

I'd go with box joints ;)

steven c newman
01-24-2020, 5:58 PM
First off, maybe a little lay out work? I found some 1/4" plywood for the bottom of the box....made a couple marks
424436
That show one corner, with the amount that needs to be in a groove...
424437
Then a few more lines...there was a problem....needed to allow for the bit holder..
424438
Had to move a couple lines..
424440
Cut the plywood to size. Had a plank I thought I could make some use of..
424441
Before I could cut the four sides to length, I had to deal with....
424442
The other edge wasn't quite as bad...we have ways..
424443
Ran one edge through, re-adjust the fence, run the other edge through...
424444
Then I could lay out and cut the sides for length....

Stay tuned, part 2 is about to start...

Andrew Pitonyak
01-24-2020, 7:52 PM
Smart, I like the picture that you drew for setup purposes. Spent the day cleaning my shop, still have a ways to go. I should have taken a before and after photo.

steven c newman
01-24-2020, 9:19 PM
Got the 4 sides to size...
424453
But.....they were a bit too tall...set the plane on the plywood, and the runners under the plane...and added a second piece of plywood under that....trying to get the height close..
424454
Just a bit off the top? Aim was to remove the darker stripe...
424455
With about a 1/2" above the top of the plane?
Milled some sockets, then a couple tails..
424456
Then a second corner was done...
424457
Then swept the floor, and called it quitting time...
424458
I can do the other two corners, tomorrow. Start time was 1445hrs....quitting time was 1630 hrs.

Then, maybe I can run a few grooves? some for the bottom, some for a raised panel top, and some to split the top off.....
Stay tuned...

steven c newman
01-25-2020, 4:43 PM
Roughly 2 hours, today....made a large, crunchy mess in the shop...
424493
Ok, to cut those dovetails....I used a router..
424494
And a stop line..
424496
Set in the vise..
424498
Mainly eyeballed the sockets...
424499
Then a chisel or two, to clean things up
424500
Then use the "pins" to mark out the tails....bandsaw to cut on the waste side of the lines. And a chisel to clean up....for a test fit..
424501
Then do corner #4....and set up the Stanley 45...have a bunch of grooves to do...
424502
Stay tuned...

steven c newman
01-25-2020, 5:00 PM
Clamp a side to the bench..
424503
And run both a groove for the bottom panel, and a groove for a raised panel in the lid
424504
While doing a dry fit, discovered the plywood was too narrow..so
424505
Cut a new one, and a test fit..
424506
Did a different approach, to raising a panel for the lid...
424507
Involved tilting the blade on the tablesaw to 15 degrees...( I didn't drive this all the way closed, was hard enough to get it back apart)
424508
With my zero clearance insert panel, to keep things from dropping into the saw...then a back bevel to adjust to fit.
424509
Checked to see if there is enough room inside...

There is an extra groove...to help make a dust seal,
424510
After the glue dries, I can come back and plough the last groove..
Stay tuned...was a busy day..:D

steven c newman
01-25-2020, 5:12 PM
Dust seal? The box for my Stanley 45 has one...
424537
Idea is to barely overlap two grooves, one inside, one outside...after the glue sets up, I can use a knife to split the top off the case..
424538
Needed to plane and sand the panel...
424539
Might be a bit rough to sand it after the clamps come off...
424540
Let this mess sit a day...then see about splitting off the lid...
Stay tuned :D

steven c newman
01-26-2020, 12:27 PM
Waiting on Brunch to settle in....might meander down to the shop after a bit, and clear away all of them clamps....8 clamps?

That reminds me...next good pay day, I need to go to Harbor Freight, and buy another handful of these clamps....

Film @ 2300 hrs....stay tuned :D

steven c newman
01-26-2020, 7:11 PM
Lets see...clamps removed....ends cleaned up
424589
Stanley 45 set up, and run around all the sides
424590
Only to find out the inside grooves wasn't deep enough...tablesaw to finish the split...Stanley 45 reset, seal thinned to fit in the lid..
424591
Lid had one corner needing re-glued....Cutter holder installed and drilled for one cutter ( for now)
424592
Made sure the plane will fit. Thumbscrew was too long, shorten it as much as I could, and still have a point on the end..
424593
Found some hinges. Waiting on the glue to dry in the far corner...need to find a latch....Might have this done by next Friday?

Stay tuned....

steven c newman
01-27-2020, 8:13 AM
Fun part....installing them hinges..and not have the lid "hinge bound" to where the lid won't close all the way.......

There is a wee bit of tear out from the 45 cutting the outside groove....thinking that will be a place to set in the barrel of the hinge?

Debating on doing a small round-over around the top of the lid....right now, it is a hard, SHARP 90 degree edge....maybe a block plane to knock the sharp corner back a bit?

steven c newman
01-27-2020, 12:58 PM
More lid fitting....then layout for a couple hinges..
424627
Besides a mallet and a chisel....I need the rest of the proper tools..
424628
Slotted brass screws. Candle to wax the threads...worked a while...
424629
Used the third hinge for lay out work....then fill the box up...
424630
And then close the lid...
424631
Brass corners, nailed with brass nails....I somehow doubt IF this sort of latch..
424632
Would work, thinking more on the lines of...
424633
Something like this...if bright brass is available.....may go over to Menard's later, and pick one up...

Need to final sand the box, and see about a coat of stain....we'll see....it IS Monday, after all..
Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
01-27-2020, 5:56 PM
Latch cost $1.99 at Menards, plus tax...finish before, or after I install it....

Might try after a late supper....or, just wait til Tuesday blows in...

steven c newman
01-27-2020, 8:44 PM
Latch has some tiny screws...
424664
Calls for a tiny screwdriver..
424666
And a small pilot hole drill bit ( nail)
424667
Then some stain was brushed on/wiped off..PIP?
424668
424669
424670
Not sure if I'll stain the inside...yet..waiting a day, to let the stain dry...then a top coat.....

Thought about a Stanley label of some sort....maybe print one out?

Stay tuned...:D

steven c newman
01-28-2020, 2:23 PM
Touch ups for the stain, today.....might as well do the insides....then see about a few coats of Amber Shellac.....

There was a suggestion about adding either felt, or, flocking to the insides....meh.

We'll see how the day goes....stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
01-28-2020, 10:37 PM
Latch is fixed...
424709

Inside stained..
424710
Just about done..
424711
Time to close it up...
424712
And sit it on the shelf....
424713
Until needed....nice weekend project?

steven c newman
02-09-2020, 9:19 PM
Just a quiet bump....plane was put to work, today...
425642
Had a dado or two to clean up. Took a while to get the depth set....but, at least it held that setting...

Might just be a keeper?

Jonathan M Peters
02-10-2020, 10:49 PM
Great deal on the router plane! And you're doing a fantastic job bringing her back to life. Excited to see the box once it's all built.

steven c newman
02-11-2020, 5:02 PM
Found out, I have to move the cutter a bit, before the lid will close....sole of the plane has to sit on the 1/4" runners....if the cutter is set too deep, lid won't close. Cutter used for the dado clean up is the 1/2" wide cutter. Forgot to try out the 3/8" cutter...oh well.....might try to make my own 1/4" wide cutter....out of another allen wrench....might use one of the Harbor Freight wrenches, with that ugly, orange, plastic handle...that has already cracked apart...

Not sure what the spear point cutter is used for....
