Our 12” sliding miter saw cut too deep, grabbed the detent plate and mangled it pretty good. Anyone know what caused this?

Can you post a pic of what got cut? Ive owned the DWS780 and am not sure what part you are referring to.

Not a solution to your problem, I did get a pretty big catch only DW780 while cutting some aluminum.
I noticed that this bent the lower fence, which is a cast piece so I couldn't really straighten it successfully.
I bought a replacement from www.ereplacementparts.com (http://www.ereplacementparts.com) and it arrived and I installed it this morning

Thinking about this some more, are you sure the blade hasn't come loose? The blade has a spacer that sits in the hole in the center of the blade. If that isn't in the right position, or installed, the blade can move about 3/16" off its axis.
