Box projects are done. Taking a few days to "R&R"......then decide what to do with..
423259
8 planks...4/4 x 6 x 54" on average..
423260
Most have decent enough grain...
423261
So...trying to decide what to make with these....

Maybe a Larger, Shaker style table, with a drawer, or two?

Maybe a Chimney Cupboard? Have a space beside the chimniey, about 12" x 12" square...

Maybe a "steamer trunk" ....hardware might be a challenge....

Maybe a Lap-style Writing Desk?

Not enough boards for a Blanket Chest, or a chest of drawers....

May try the table....and see IF there is enough left over for the Lap Desk....I can use pine on the insides of the table....including the drawer(s?) sides and back....

Stay tuned...Single Brain Cell Sketch Up is now at work....

Well, for right now..I'll see about doing that Organizer box Paul Sellers is doing as a class.....I can use one of the eight planks for that....have downloaded the plans....might be fun to try out?

Stay tuned...

OK...Lumber. One plank was sorted out from the stack...
423408
Mainly for a lack of knots, live edges, no warpping...and decent grain..
423409
Downloaded the plans
423410
Front view..
423411
End view
423412
Drawer details....there is also a cutting list. Need to start cutting parts to sizes....and see about thinning them down a bit....plank is 4/4 Ash.....

Might be something for me to do....to keep me busy for a week or two?

steven c newman
01-12-2020, 1:53 PM
Hmmmm, seems a lot of the lumber Sellers used for this, is 1/2" thick......might have to resaw this 4/4 Ash a bit....need to cut the parts to size, and then to thicknesses needed. Might see how a wide plank can be thinned down....

Lid and base are 11/16" thick....we'll see.

Sellers uses "slips" to house the drawer bottom....I use the Stanley 45 and a straight cutter to plough a groove. I think I can do the dovetails he uses...we'll see...

Hmmm, upon further review....

Will set up the tablesaw to 1/2" between the blade and the fence. Run all 4 edges through of each board, after they have been cross cut to length. Handsaw to cross cut. After the tablesaw is done, I have a 5-1/2ppi "Chrome Edge" Craftsman rip saw.....just back from being sharpened....that I can follow the tablesaw's kerf with.....will be a bit better than "burning" my way through with the bandsaw....

Then plane to smooth things out. I still have some 5mm plywood for a drawer bottom, and the bottom of the upper storage area. Will need to mill grooves for them, after the dovetails are done...I can align the grooves to be hidden, that way.

Need to get Mr. Gumption, and Mr. Motivation involved.....stage one will be wood prep....
Stay tuned....

Monday...shop is closed on Mondays...safer that way. Van needed repaired this morning...have errands to run...may try for Tuesday?

Stanley #71-1/2 will be getting it's missing depth adjuster wheel thursday's mail....

Stay tuned....(anyone want to show up and help out?)

ps: Plank has arrived in the shop....
423656
At least the is done....Allen wrench laying there?
423657
Has been ground down a bit...
423658
Work in progress....needs cut down and notched....hope I wind up with a 3/8" cutter...

Ok...bench was a bit too crowded this morning.
.423698
needed a bit of elbow room. So, cleared the deck for action...even put a few things away
423699
Plans laid out, a few tools set out...that I had the wrong saw...used it anyway..as the Atkins 65 wasn't quite right...Disston D-8 worked better...set the plank in the bench vise. Edges were a bit to rough for a mitre guage on the tablesaw to hold squarely..so..
423700
Needed to cut 2 for the front and back, and one to make the 2 ends....and hopefully enough for both the base, and the lid...
423701
usual luck...at least I have enough for either the base ( Sellers used a solid wood base) or, a lid. Sellers wants the two to be 11/16" thick...hmmm..
423702
Caliper reads 0.998"....may have to plane it down a bit?

Width will be fine...after I joint the edges
423703
And, square the ends....base, or Lid? base is solid wood, because the drawers slides in and out on it.
423704
Reset the tablesaw, and plug it in..been awhile....I jointed one edge of the other 3 parts....sit that edge against the fence. Distance is a bit wider than needed..
423705
To get most of the waste off. Reset the fence for a hair strong of final width....however, the front needs split, to make the drawer front...Took a few trips..
Which will be covered in the next episode....including getting these down to 1/2"
Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
01-14-2020, 1:39 PM
Ok... ripped for width..
423706
So that were I to stand these up on edge, they'd all match...front panel has been split, too....and still match for width.
Now, these need to be thinned down to 1/2" thick....resaw was set up on the tablesaw...
423707
There is 9/16" between the fence and the blade, blade is raised up as far as can be...
423708
Just missing the halfway point...two passes..
423709
Thicker one will get planed down to the 1/2" thickness required....might have a use for the other "half"..
423710
I lowered the saw blade, to make sawing the skinny parts safer....all set for the Stanley #3?
Thinking I can use a piece of Poplar....as a floor for the upper compartment...
423711
And maybe some of the thinner offcuts as drawer sides?
423712
next episode? Dovetail the sides...
Stay tuned..

Parts have been planed flat, and smooth, couple edges needed jointed. One end needed squared up. The 5" long ends have been mitresawn to that length.

Forgot the camera, this time around, sorry. I may run back down to the shop in a bit....may take the camera with me...

Almost ready to cut some dovetails...
423796
As for the drawer....need more more parts made for it....then I can make a drawer...
423797
Maybe tomorrow? We'll see....

Stay tuned...

steven c newman
01-15-2020, 8:34 PM
Parts have been planed flat, ends squared..
423803
One part, for the ends, was cut for length of 5", on the Stanley #358.....Wanted the ends square. 2 planes in use...
423804
Millers Falls # 90 V-Line, and the WR #62.....used the 62 as a Jointah Plane..
423805
Getting things so they are all the same height...
423806
Have to figure out which will be a drawer front..
423807
Still had a few sticks, to use as drawer sides, and the back...
423808

Waiting on an appointment to see the Kidney Doctor....need to remove a 3mm "pebble" from the right kidney....making things hurt, right now..

Stay tuned....

01-16-2020, 7:31 PM
3 hours in the shop, to get to a dry fit...
423844
Right side of me started to get sore...time to hang it up, for the day..
423845
Will try doing some plough work...tomorrow...
423846
A Mr. Witherby helped out, today...
423847
Hate doing tails first...

steven c newman
01-17-2020, 6:32 PM
One hour in the shop, today..plus Laundry Detail...Used the Stanley 45 to mill some grooves..
423918
To house the plywood "floor"....was able to get a glue up done..
423919
And checked for square, too..
423920
Had to re-do a resaw..
423921
Plane it flat..
423922
And smooth..on both faces..
423923
And even planed parts for the drawer...
423924
One to make the drawer's sides, the other to make the back. made a small mess..
423925
Loaded the clothes from the washer over to the dryer...and closed up shop, once I had swept the shop floor.
We getting there...may try again, tomorrow
Stay tuned.:D

I suppose I should head down to the shop, and remove those clamps...and clean things up....film at 2300 hrs...

steven c newman
01-18-2020, 12:12 PM
Well, box came out of the clamps, and didn't fly apart...always a good sign
Plane and sanders to clean things up..
423986
4 sides, top and bottom edges....

Base needed a round-over done...
423987
End grain first, both ends, then lay the base on a side..
423988
Do a test fit, to center the box on the base...
423989
Found a couple tear outs....will fix them later....

Paul Sellers glued his base to the box....since I am following his plans....
423990
Guess I'll do the same....letting this sit a day....need to see about a lid, and a drawer...
Stay tuned :D

steven c newman
01-19-2020, 9:41 PM
Got all 7 planks planed down, last night. Under the weather all day, today....will see how Monday goes....need to make the lid, next. Following along with Sellers' videos...waiting on the drawer build video....

steven c newman
01-20-2020, 2:35 PM
3 blanks to choose from..
#1..
424117
Knots are causing waves along the length...meh..
#2...
424118
All quarter sawn....no knots...not sure IF I can keep the brown edge...might be good enough for the lid..
424119
Thinking more of matching this one with #1 for a table top? Looking like #2 will be it....maybe?

steven c newman
01-20-2020, 8:02 PM
Well..chose #2...hauled it down to the shop...laid things out with a bit extra...
424175
Disston D-8, 26" long, 11 ppi, late 1940s....ends weren't bad, the edges were a bit..off..
424176
Didn't take all that long, before..
424177
Edges were then rounded over, then Sellers called for a rebate all the way around the underside of the lid..
424178
Then one in back, is to clear the barrel of the hinges...the other 3 edges are just to match the back one...

Got the drawer parts sized, dovetailed, and glued up..
424179
Twas a busy day...I think I'll let the drawer sit there a day...while I rest up...stay tuned:D

steven c newman
01-21-2020, 1:09 PM
Let's see....got the front of the box fixed up..
424208
Got the hinges installed ( somehow, was one of those days)
424209

Drawer came out of the clamps....and the fitting, and fighting began....along with the Marine DI level cussing:mad:
First off, top of the drawer needed a shim added...and tapered to fit...involved glue and clamps...
424210
Glue was having a rough time of it....then I planed it to fit the opening...then added brass nails to keep the shim in place...was trying to level the bottom edges of the drawer..."CRACK"
424211
So..while waiting on this glue to dry, so I can sand it down....I went ahead and added a handle...
424212
Will help to pull the drawer, in and out, during the fitting

So, how bad of a day was it? Out of nowhere, an old pen happened to roll across the bench, and into my way....pen was soon on it's way, to parts unseen, by air....
Have to go see the Kidney Doctor this afternoon, about a stone problem...maybe later this evening, the glue will be dry?

Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
01-21-2020, 10:53 PM
Just a couple shots, to see if anyone is awake, out there..
424248
Drawer has a piston fit, too.
.424249
Went to stain the project...can was empty..had to go out and buy a new can...

About time for a PIP?
Stay tuned..:D

steven c newman
01-22-2020, 3:30 PM
Ok..give me a bit, be back with a few photos from the stain application today....:D

steven c newman
01-22-2020, 4:28 PM
Ok..time for a PIP? Stain has been wiped down, and being allowed to dry fully..
424286
Box has "iron feet" (aka..Iron Foot?)
424287
A look at the back of this thing ( only 12-1/2 in length, overall)
424288
I relocated the hinges a bit..now they can hold the lid open..
424289
A look at the drawer front. Added a strip to fill in the "extra groove" ca glued to the drawer...as a "guide"
424290
Can barely see it,...that's the idea..;)
424291
End details..tried to match the grain directions a bit
Once the stain has fully dried, will see about a decent top coat....
Stay tuned:D

Well, waiting on Lunch to settle through the systems.....then I'll meander down to the shop, and give this box a coat of either shellac, or varnish....

May name this box after the Lord of the Iron Hills...Dain II, aka Iron Foot....

Will post when things are dry, again...stay tuned...

steven c newman
01-23-2020, 7:17 PM
