View Full Version : Saw arbor, slitting saw arbor

We have an operation that will require a slitting saw type operation with leads, etc.. separating the top off a vertical hollow form. Approximately 500 pieces. Material is wood. We would need about 1.25" of reach and only about 1.25" of cut depth.

I have a couple 1 1/4" shaper arbors for the CNC and could probably have a small diameter (4.5"-6" saw blade) bored to fit, but wondering if anyone knows of a better solution aside from custom tooling?

RPM is a concern. HSD ES919 spindle, 10HP but HP is compromised below about 10K RPM.

Basically what Im hoping for is a small diameter carbide saw blade on an arbor preferably directly to ISO30 taper.

Im considering just running a thin shaper groover in an arbor but the diameter and RPM have me a little concerned based on my spindle.

Vortex offers a 3 wing cutter with a 1/8" kerf. The stock version OD is too small, but it would be very lightweight, so you might inquire about that custom option. I know that is not your preference, but I have asked for custom tools before and they are not always crazy.

Lamello's Zeta P2 is used on CNC's as well, and they have a 100mm diameter cutter for use on a CNC. It uses a 16mm diameter shaft. I have one of these on a shelf I would part with since that project never materialized.

The 3 wing would most definitely have some advantages over the Amana I posted. I will call Vortex tomorrow. Thanks a bunch Brad.

If you would prefer slitting saw arbor so you can use a narrower saw blade, or different diameters, you might want to check out these holders:

They are all balanced to 20k rpm and made to work with carbide slitting saws.

I have looked at the BT holders several times and have a few here. This one will have to run in the ATC so I need to use ISO. I have spindle arbors for shaper tooling but was hoping for a smaller OD. Will see what Vortex comes back with today. I think the Amana will do even with the high tooth count.

I'd encourage you to use a thick cutter like the 3 wing you showed. Anytime I've used a thin slitting type cutter they heat up in the cut, start to warp and destroy themselves in short order. Talking really thin stuff here like .025" thick. To get around it, you need to do multiple plunge cuts to allow the cutter to cool which is a pain. You might be able to get around it with a thicker slitting cutter like .0625". FWIW.

Im hoping to be OK in that there is an internal recess/rebate in the hollow form so we are only having to cut through about .300" full depth of cut and the rest will be far less than half that (pretty much a whisker).

It will be interesting because to make the Amana tool work the feeds should be nutso fast which will be interesting to watch.

3 wing or Amana the plan was climb cut, tabed, and manually release the part to be cut free.

May be a pucker project.
