View Full Version : Add veneer to just one side?

Veneer is supposed to be added to the ‘back’ side of a veneered project to keep it stable.

My project is a built-in, using pre-finished 3/4” birch cabinet sides. The un-finished backs of the plywood sides, top and bottom will be visible even when the nearby cabinet doors are closed, because the panels to which I’m referring form the sides of open shelves.

I could use (expensive) hardwood plywood. But I don’t want the labor of finishing all those interiors (not to mention cost of unseen cabinet interiors).

Do I dare add veneer just to the surfaces of the bay that holds the shelves? The sides, top and bottom are all about 10” x 30”. They will be secured to 1/4” plywood (at the back) and to 3/4” hardwood face frames at the front. There will be several days between the time I make panels and final assembly. Can I count on the fact this is already plywood, or the fact that the ‘back’ is already finished? Am I risking disaster?
