Any Idea What This Was Used For?

This was found among the tools from my Dad's estate. An old wooden drill was found with it but not sure if it is related to this piece or not.

It looks like it could be a crude way to keep a drill set perpendicular. If the chuck fits inside the 'U' the wedge could hold it in place against a wall or other vertical surface.

Just my 422749 guess.
